Default I have a chance to get a Revo

A guy at my dad's work is selling his Revo, but it has a bad transmission. My dad is supposed to bring it home tommorow so I take a look at it. I think im gonna buy it, but hopefully he doesn't give me a high price. A tranny isn't too expensive right? He said he has upgraded arms, rockers, and shocks. What do you guys think I should do? Also, where is a good place to buy a tranny for a Revo, besides ebay? Thanks for any suggestions.

If it is just a gear, and since he said it still has reverse, I'll do a FOC, and see if it works good. The truck only has two tanks through it. So it is practically brand new. Hopefully its in "NEW" shape.

Two tanks? That's not even broke in. That sounds a little fishy. Hey you never know.

More than likely it's just the reverse gear that's bad. The FOC will take care of that.

If it looks good and the price is right, you can't go wrong with the Revo. Hopefuly he will through in all the stock parts from his upgrades if he still has them.

Well, the guy said he was running it and automatically it shifted into reverse and went crazy. Might be the opticrap. I get to check the truck out tomorow.

yea sounds like the reverse gear, or if not the FOC will replace it anyway. check the engine's compression too. if it has a good pinch and he isnt trying to suck money out of you it sounds like a good buy

If it went into reverse automatically, it probably only stripped 1 or 2 gears. They are about $3 a piece. If you get a chance to buy it for a good price, go for it. The tranny is easy to fix. You can literally have it out and apart in about 15 minutes. And if you do have to buy a whole new tranny, just get it off Ebay. I have someone I get a lot of my Revo parts from that sells on Ebay and he is great to deal with. Anymore, I just email him what I want, paypal the money and my parts are on my door in 2-3 days.

To completely fix the tranny problem, look into doing a forward only conversion and getting rid of the optidrive. Congrats on your find. The Revo is a great truck and you will have a blast with it.

Ok, so I get the Revo today, just to see what is wrong with it. It seems fine, but I have a couple questions. If you roll the truck backwards, is the spur gear supposed to rotate freely? Also, if you roll the truck forwards, is it supposed to make a cracking sound? I have no idea what the cracking is from, but should it be there? Thanks

(Just a little paranoid)

You will hear the plastic spur gear meshing as you roll it forward or backwards. Do you feel excessive amounts of resistance? Does it make a lot of real loud noise when you roll it? How does the spur gear look? Major wear, teeth worn badly?

Like the one guy said a tranny teardown is nothing, and if you don't feel confident buy a new one on ebay.

Make sure you check the compression on the motor, when you turn the flywheel you should feel a good degree of resistance.

Good luck

I feel as if the flywheel is pretty lose? The spur is fine, I just hear a noise, not sure what though. Should the flywheel be loose enough for me to turn it around all the way, or is that bad?

If you have a shredded gear in the tranny, it could be the pieces of plastic catching in the teeth of the other gears. I had it completely lock up the tranny when mine shredded the 1st time. The most important thing is to see if it runs good, the electronics work and how much he wants. The tranny can be fixed.

Ok, i bought it for $200. The truck is good, just the tranny bothers me. It seems fine though. The electronics work, the engine just didn't have a glow plug in it which made it seem as if it had no compression, and its just a little dirty but that can be cleaned. So I FINALLY HAVE A TRUCK! Thanks for all the help guys.

If you have the mechanical apptitude the rebuilding the tranny should be a breeze.

Congratulations! Sounds like a good buy. While you are looking at the tranny, consider a 'forward only conversion'. That will get rid of reverse, but it also gets rid of the optidrive that most likely caused the current tranny problem.

a few tips, as noted by alv.. loseing the opti drive and adding a failsafe and a FOC are two important stped to getting your new moneypit ready to go and be a bit better off. there are other GR8 hopups to do....
