Dreaming of a hovercraft :)
You know.. One day I wanna build a hovercraft.
I wanna have 2 ducted fan engines in there with 2 servos.. to control steering.. and a smaller .12 constant velocity high efficiency blower for lift..
Smething in the 1/8 to 1/5 scale.. It shouldnt be that hard!
I could borrow parts from other models.. and weld something together!
Since this thing is riding on air.. speed shouldnt be that much of a problem! Controlling it would be an issue tho..
I would really like to do this sometime! hehe

I know they have em out there.. but I'm talkin .. the Humvee of hovercrafts.. something that can get over there and kick some ass hehe..
Wouldnt it be cool to have one of these on a beach?!
hmm.. if the engine stalls.. no nevermind I didnt say that! lol
I'd really like to build one of my own.. especially since my school has a whole metal shop!

I already designed an rc model so i can make a real one. its 1:16 scale model made of foam and is about 6 inches long and it needs to hold up 12.5 punds to float a person and a 30 pound gas engine. i still have to make a bag for it. I got a real good design, its a platform with a box around it. its too hard to describe but you have to see it. ( []____[] )it looks like this if you would slice it. Around the box there are holes for the air to get out and the bag will attach to the top of the box. it will float if the engine shuts off cause the holes are high in the chassis. if the rc model works good and floats ill put some good radio gear and a good motor in it and keep it. I was thinking of gettin a thunder tiger 12 cause its 50$ at tower

hover craft
if you have an old electric (or your kids have one), scrap it and use the parts to make the hover craft. if it sinks not much lost.
to avoid sinking use an inertube that is pre-inflated.

Did somebody say Hovercraft?!!?
No, its not mine. But I've been planning on building one like it for some time now.
Its a twin engine (.40 airplane engines) craft. The thrust fans in the rear are varible pitch (like a helicopter) so you can go into reverse on the fly, and the adjust independantly, so you can speed up one fan and slow the other to help in tight turns.
The other engine is strickly for the twin lift fans. Very cool rig indeed.

HOLY SWEET MOTHER OF GOD!!
That beautiful..
But heck I'd like to put in an onboard dynamo and get rid of the batteries
Maybe use those little 12v dynamos that people used to use in bicycles! Still would nbeed one battery to regulate current flow, but we dont have to worry about charging it.
And as long as the motor is running, the reciever will run!
Well Hairball, THANKS for those awesome pics!!

Quick question.. The PC fan idea is interesting.. but where does it get its juice?
ITs kinda confusing and I dont really see any big betteries or any dynamos either
Thanks!

You're welcome guys.
As I said before, its not mine, so I really don't know much about it. I got the pictures and the little info I have from a website that disapeered about five years ago. I chatted with the builded a few times, and he WAS going to send me some CAD drawings of the craft so I could copy his.
But one day the site stopped working, and the guy pretty much disapeered.
I've been playing with ideas for quite some time now, thinking about using Helicopter tail rotors for rear trust fans, and things like that. Just haven't started building anything yet.

mines way more comlicated than that. lol Mine is some white foam stuff taped togher and a ducted fan right now. I would love to take that thing apart. It must have cost quite a bit. I like the cooling fans, but they need to be on front not the top to blow over the fins. I think my monster pirate has about the same capbilites as a hovercraft, it does hydroplane i have done it. It might float across a river

For the most versatile hovercraft design.. I think it'd have to be nitro-electric.
That way you dont have to worry about the damn motor dying and the hovercraft dying in water lol
Oh well I'm talking about a multi-thousand dollar project
IF I ever dont get married, I'll consider it!

Thats why you buy a boat or helicopter as well, then install a hook on top of the hovercraft, so when it gets stuck out in the water, you fly over and pick it up.
I'd like to try this with my JR Ergo 60, but that thing is hard enough to fly as it is!

that hovercraft looks more complex than I think it needs to be.
a: he is using external fans to cool the engines when he has plenty of airflow from the lift fans themselves... a little porting and he has plenty of flow...
reverse on the propulsion fan is kinda cool but who needs it... reverse on a hovercraft is when you spin the whole thing around and floor it
independant fan control for steering?... not needed either... its more effective to use larger rudders. as it is if you design the rudders right you should be able to spin the craft in place.
but since I have never designed a hovercraft I cant be called an expert so you can just ignore everything I said
..... it does look cool though, doesnt it.
