how much smoke is the norm.. savage21
This is a copy of a post that i put up on maxxtraxx.. but the site seems down.. thought i might have more luck here... thanks!
-------
apologies for the newbie question.. the savage is my first nitro car and nobody in my local area has a remote control car let alone a nitro.. so all my help comes from the forums (thanks!) and from guys at my LHS...
My savage is stock, has had over a gallon* of fuel put through it (15%) and is using the same plug for the last gallon (os 8 - i think - been a while since the last change) - hope this is enough info...
and now to the question... I know that there needs to be a trail of smoke at all times.. but how thick? what is considered to be the norm?.. is it enough to just see some smoke? the temps are usually within range although it has peaked occasionally in the 300-320 - not for long periods and this is on usually on warm days (80+*)
now the truck always has a visible trial of smoke.. but its not something i would call "thick". should i be richening it? or is it okay? im simply going by the plug, the temps and how the truck is running and sounding?
Thanks in advance!
*the conversions might be out a bit - im in AU and am doing rough conversions for you. im using an onboard venom temp gauge.

Despite what you think.. environmental temperature affects engine temperature somewhat inversely!!
warm air=less dense air= riche(ER) mixture
but heck th rule I go by is..
When its running full throttle, it should leave a TRAIL of smoke.. anytime you floor it, it should leave smoke. This combined with engine temperature is a sure fire way of finding the best setting!
What I like to do is richen up the low speed needle.. so it may idle a little rough but it will cool the engine really quick when your not accelerating like crazy!
Another thing.. LISTEN to the engine.. This will tell you soo much!
With pratice and patience, you can listen and tell whether the motor is running lean or rich!

Hey Landshark..
What %age oil do you run?
I think I'm going to try some 20% nitro in my savage to see if I can get a bit more punch out of it.

Hey Landshark,
I am using 25% monster fuel and the truck perfoms really great. When I turn at high speed the back tires slide out from under the truck and begins to donut and powerslide. It never did that with 20%
