Does anyone have a monster truck equivalent of a stall clutch? I want my motor to rev higher before the clutch starts engaging. I know from my gokart experience that you can make the springs stronger or shoes lighter, but will the same thing work with a 3 shoe ofna clutch?

If you cut down from the ends of the clutch it will make it engine engage at a higher RPM.

Yeah that is true..

To engage sooner:

1) 3 Clutch vs 2 Clutch
2) Heavier shoes
3) Lighter springs

To engage later:
1) Shave little bits from shoes (Careful.. if you dont take off the same amount, they wont engage evenly)
2) Put on a set of stronger sprngs

Not much to it.

However getting the shoes and the clutch bells to alighn, thats slightly more difficult. Why? Its just that not all clutch bells are the same and you gotta find one thats the right size and length to fit perfectly.

This thing spings at 30k+ RPMS and you wanna make sure its perfect!

rather then cut the shoes ends off, I drill tiny holes in them to lighten them up, this way i know that both wiegh the same.

It's not just the weight that is critical, but the mass moment of innertia. If you drill a hole near the pin, it will have less effect than drilling it near the end of the shoe (I won't go through the math and diagrams unless someone wants me to - rather boring calculations). You should try and drill them in as close to the same location as possible.

On a more positive note, if you didn't quite cut the shoes the same (or drill the hole in exactly the same spot), the one with more weight (or the one with the hole drilled closest to the pin) will engage first, have some premature wear, and voila, it is now as light (or balanced) as the others.

My point? If you cut the shoes as close to the same as possible (or drill a hole in as close to the same spot as you can), the clutch will wear into perfect balance after a short period of time.

I'm going to have to try this with my old stock clutch shoes...

for me the savage is only really lacking in the low end.. once the RPMs come up it picks up power quick, so delaying the clutch a bit should help with the launch

well thats the engines powerband not the clutch. i want it to slip more so it has more power when it starts moving. I know with the kart you have to do many laps to get your clutches engagment speed perfect with the engines power band, so these clutches slip untill like 4000rpm. That may not sound like a lot in the 30,000+ rpm rc engines, but in karts max rpm is like 9000 and thats really high. i was just wondering if its the same with a .21. Thanks for all the help.

sorry i misread your post unstable. I guess the clutch should help. I thought you meant the clutch was making it run bad at low end for some reason. I guess i was just too tired before.
