Default Teach me about radios....

I have a MGT 4.6 with the XP3 radio..the AM sucks and has little to no options so i was wanting to upgrade my radio. I also am planning on eventually getting another nitro so i would like to be able to use the new radio for that also..I dont want to spend a ton so i will probably be looking at Ebay or other used radios..Thinking about 2.4ghz depending on what i can get for a decent price. I guess my main question is, will i be able to use my existing servos if i only get a transmitter and receiver right now? do all servos work with all receivers or do you have to match them? Enlighten me in the field of radios please..

Good affordable radios that you can get used would be the JR XS3 Pro and Spektrum DX3.0. Both will get rid of your interference problems and offer a lot more fine-tuning the the XP3 radio.

for you there are a few radios out there.
Spektrum dx3 which is the cheapest and comes with 2 receivers.
Than you got the futaba 3pm and the Airtonics mx 3 fhss which i just got.
They all have their weak points and strong points and you cant go wrong with either.

That is what I did. I bought a spektrum 2.0 with receiver and I used my old servos. DSM is the best way to go. If you need three channels you will need the DX3.0. The DX2.0 has a 2 vehicle memory so I bought a second receiver and I use the one transmittor. The 3.0 can handle more but I forgot off hand. The spektrums also have built in fail safe so if the truck goes out of range it applies the brakes. There are alot of nice programing features for servo stop point, centering, reversing, emergency steering button and more. I picked mine up on ebay for 125 plus shipping. Another thing I like is I have a 1 inch antenna and it doesn't clear the body. No more broken antennas. My son just coils the antenna in his receiver box and he has no problems at all.

The DX3.0 has 4 model memory, but the older DX3 has 3 model memory. If you still have reverse in that MGT, you'll need the 3rd channel, so you're looking at a 3 or 3.0.

What about an FM radio? You can buy a good FM for less money than a 2.4ghz radio.

The reason FM is cheaper then DSM is because DSM is 10x better then FM.

I have the 3pm. I like it, its got a ton of features however I rarely use them. I think that it has a 10 model memory. Extra feature are nice, but in reality, you only have 2-3 channels. These designers can come up with many features howeve, most people have no use for them. If you plan on going to tracks then the selectable frequency spectrum radios are key. FM crystals are 20-30 bucks a pop, and it is irritating as hell when you go to a track and someone is on your frequency. I would trade every feature that I have for a selectable frequency. I would say that there would be someone on my frequency 1/2 of the times that I would hit a track (and that is on FM). If you dont go to tracks then it does not really matter.
