Right Engine Temp

Question for all you veteran gas drivers. What temp do most of you run your engines at. I have a duratrax nitroquake and live in south carolina and was just out playing with new temp guage and it got up to 310 or so on 20% nitro. going to go to 10% when the other is gone but wanted to see what temp everyone was running theirs at. Dont want to have to rebuild engine too soon. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I run about 220 maxx, on mine, but Ive got a nova head on so it would be more like 250-260 with stock head on!!

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure your motor will run at an even higher temp if you switch to 10%. I would try switching to a bigger cooling head. That solved my promblem. I have a hard time trying to crack 200 deg these days where 260 was the norm before I swithed heads.

Finding a aftermarket head for,

A Torq .21 will be a problem! Duratrax makes another head for it but, it is not any bigger then stock! Less nitro may work and the Torq .21's recommend nitro % is between 10-20%! I have to run my Torq .21 super rich just for it to run right (4 turns out on the HSN) and it runs cool at 220-230 under normal running and when I run it hard it gets up to 260-270. According to an article I read about nitro fuel (The quotes are from the president of Wildcat fuels). It said that in some cases you will run hotter with higher % of nitro if over the recommended amounts!

Here is a link to that article!

I've read somewhere that 310 is excessive, and i think that it's generally accepted that it should run around the 230-250 mark, but i think it varies with each engine. You have to take into account the temp, humidity, etc. of the area where you're playing as well though.

It was kinda of humid and hot today that I was running. i heard that you should try and keep the temp somewhere around 280-310. But I think that was coming from a guy who flys airplanes and he said that airplanes got more cooling than we did with the trucks or cars on the ground. i all ready have the needle turned out about 4-5 turns already. So I am getting plenty of blue smoke. Thanks to who ever sent up the article on nitro fuels. I will be breaking in the motor again when I go to 10%. The truck is pretty much stock, and I beat the heck out of it everytime I go out. Shoot I lost the right rear wheel today when I was playing.

once you run 20% you cant go back to 10%.

Legendary 06-18-2003 02:02 AM

That's not true!

You can run any % that is recommended for your engine as long as you do another short break-in! I have run everything from 30% to 10% and back in my TRX Pro and it has over 8 gallons through it at this point and still runs stong! I think you should stick to one fuel % as long as it runs good and does not cost an arm and a leg but, you can change it if needed!
