Default Kyosho HOR Build

Well I got my hands on a few of the kits new and used so I thought I would put post some build pics. I am going to try it out stock first to see how it goes and then brushless.

I am building one too, but with some upgrades already. Like aluminum forks, rear swing arms, and shocks, metal gears etc.

I am using the same receiver like yours, and ESC from a rc18b. Just wondering what will you use for ESC with the stock hor motor?

my first setup was with a rc18r esc as well and a e-flight lipo but it sucked. So then i went with a mamba brushless and chewed the gears my first run and now i am wanting a steel gears. I am still using the rc18r's rx but with the antenna inside the riders body the range isn't the best

Thanks for the video.

On your first setup. Did you use the stock HOR motor (came with the kit) with the RC18 esc. Or a stock rc18 motor with the rc18 esc?

Because my RC18 motor is slightly bigger than the stock HOR motor. I'll have to drill new holes or fabricate a mounting plate to get it mounted.

Did you have to mod to fit the brushless motor?

(Edit) Never mind. I reveiwed all your photos and got the answer.

I just put mine all together and instead of using the motor plate I just put washers on the screws. Serves the same purpose.

That looks like WAY too much work. Venom GPV-1..... plug and play.

Default RE: Kyosho HOR Build

I just finished an HOR. Had a gen 1 kyosho non-HOR when they first came out.

I went brushless with this build, and lots of carbon details. Used an 18A car esc from hobbycity.com, and a 20-30 5250 Electrifly Ammo brushless motor. Note the stock motor is a 20-30 (20mm dia x 30mm length). I first used a 12A rc heli esc, but it didnt have brakes, so I got a car esc.

Made mine to replicate a Fogarty Ducati 996 superbike. Converted swingarm to single side, and reinforced it with a steel bar. Made carbon pipes to go under seat cowl.

Drilled and lightened the front wheel weight. Dont go too light, or else front end washes out on fast turns. Not cool.

Full bearings everywhere. A hobbycity.com 1600mah 20C 2S lipo fits exactly in the battery compartment.

I was THIS close to getting a Venom, then realized how generic they are. Rider doesnt move, body has no detail. Sure its easy to upgrade, but thats part of the fun with the Kyosho - like a hot rod, making things fit !

Someone asked me about the rcvr.

I use a 2.4ghz rcvr and TX made by an HK company called Eurgle. It is a 3ch 2.4ghz system. The rcvr only measures 27mm x 18mm x 7mm. The antenna is only 5in long. With it mounted, there is TONS of room inside for a bigger esc, and a larger brushless motor.

Looks good Wayshwing. I built one up during the summer. I put a 1/18 Castle sidewinder in mine cuz I knew I was going to need to adjust the profile to have better control. I actually put a 8000Kv motor in there which is way too much but with the ability to tune it down with the castle software all I can't do is grab a whole lot of throttle getting out of a turn but I think it's more realistic that way. The actual bikes were such a handful so I figured why go small. I also found out that brushless power requires a strong gear box. I ended up having to upgrade to the Kyosho harden steel gears and an Aluminum gear case. I found this out after destroying aluminum gears. So If you plan on putting some miles on it I would suggest those two upgrades for brushless power. Another hop-up I did was to put fishing weights in the body of the rider. It helps him get side to side faster. After all this I put some major miles on the bike in probably only two weeks and have actually worn through the front tire. Next summer I plan on getting some new rubber and potentially a new frame. I've noticed that the molding of my frame has the front pivot slightly offset to one side, so when I going driving in the corner hard the bottom cowling rubs the ground. But I love this little bike. I can't wait to add more hop-ups to it.

I TOTALLYsuggest the following setup, based on a LOT of testing...

Radio -
Eurgle 2.4Ghz 3ch receiver (very small, about 22mm x 12mm x 8mm!) plus the 3ch Eurgle TX is awesome! 8 model memory plus LCD screen. About $80 w/rcvr. EBay or R2Hobbies.com

ESC -
Exceed Novatech B471525A brushless car ESC; just fits inside the chassis along with the rcvr. Very bomber! About $30 on Hobbypartz.com

Servo -
Hobbycity Hextronix 14G metal gear mini servo - from Hobbycity.com, very lightweight, very fast (about .08sec) and great torque. About $12 Hobbycity.com

Motor -
GWS Electrifly 2030 5200kv brushless. VERY fast, almost too fast yet very smooth and controllable. Like a V8 engine in a Volkswagen. EXACT same size as the stock Kyosho motor (20mm dia x 30mm length) so drops right in. About $30 Towerhobbies.com

I did notice that I didn't have to replace any of my gearbox plastic? Maybe because I'm running bearings everywhere which gets rid of most friction. All my gears are stock plastic even with brushless.

I replaced all of the large phillips screws with 4-40 x 3/8 stainless steel socket screws (mcmaster.com), since the phillips screws strip after a few rebuilds. I dont do too much aluminum, since it adds weight, and doesnt flex under impact like plastic does, instead it bends which then needs replacement. Plastic cheaper to replace anyways

Definitely replace swing arm with aluminum though, if you run brushless.

Venom medium compound front and rear tires for better grip. Use Venom rear tire insert. (Towerhobbies.com).

Front tire can be filled with a strip of soft gray foam (not dense black stuff), since flywheel doesnt allow Venom insert to fit.

Run lightweight front wheelflywheel for good handling and a littlefaster steering than stock flywheel (2wheelhobbies.com)

I shreded my gears with just a Monster Micro motor upgrade..
I went with ebay Aum.gears.... found that power wasn't going down due to a gear
slipage....Ca'd and should take care of issues...

Have had it for a couple of years...Will finally get it out...
Didn't paint yet, as I just want to run it...

I went with the Futaba motorcyle gear, that was made for the bike, as it was a pain with anything else...

It was easy to instal brushless for me... and 2.4ghz RX. I used the Sidewinder Micro ESC and it fit in the radiator spot, the 1/18th Castle Creations KV5400 also fit. I used a 1/18 12T spur as well.

Wayshwing where did you get the aluminum frame? Unless that is the chrome one? or did you just paint it lol. I made the mistake of using lock tight on a few screws and it ate the plastic just ordered a replacement main-frame it was only $9.00
