The fuel that is combusting in the engine keeps the plug hot.

Diesel engines aren't like nitro's. They ignite their fuel purely from heat generated by compression. Some of them do have glow plugs, but they're only used to heat the engine to help with cold starting.

In a nitro, the element of the glow plug holds heat after combustion, and that ignites the fuel in the next cycle. Remember, even when a glow engine is idling, combustion occurs several times per second, so it isn't having to hold that heat for very long.

A couple of things actually.
1. the glow fuel engine is a "semi-diesel" meaning that some of the ignition energy comes from the heat of compression
2. the kicker is the glow plug element, the alloy metals in the element wire cause a catalytic reaction with methanol (the primary ingredient in glow fuel), the main byproduct of this reaction is heat, enough when combined with the heat of compression will ignite the air fuel mixture.

Does that help?

i have seen engines on ebay for planes that run on desil and they look the same as a nitro motor. Wonder what would happen if you put desil in a nitro engine. I know that my trx 2.5 will run on wd 40 for a short time.

a stinky oily mess.... diesel hobby size engines don't run on pump diesel fuel, they run on an entirely different fuel that is just as expensive or more then model fuel. advantages include better fuel economy, better torque, disadvantages are that no one carries the fuel, and the smell.

do a search on here or google for 'davis diesel'
