On road. The 2 speed transmission makes it illegal to compete in off-road racing.

There great off-road. Off of any and everyroad that is. Jk...
They are great in the front yard and in parking lots, tons of fun. Don't be a sore loser though....lol

RE: jato better off road or on road
The Jato was designed for the offroad so this question is easily answered. In stock form it is illegal for racing because of the two speed tranny but traxxis offers a single speed conversion for it. This will give the truck more accelleration out of the corners too. If it bounces uncontrollable offroad then increase the dampening by either switching to thicker shock oil or a smaller hole piston. The stock .15 will probably be alright at club races but you will need a good .12 like the OS .12 CV-R for anything else. The .12 will make the car easier to drive around the course due to having less power. Remember it is not who is fastest in a straight line but around the course. Having too much engine can make the car hard to control. Good Luck.

I agree with sport10 - many people who bash on the jato either dont have one... or dont know how to set it up to race. you have to remember out of the box it is a basher because that is the bulk of traxxas customers.

Ive seen one go and its place is for road no matter what anyone says(the speed is just too great and the handling is bleh). With a few changes and mods it can be great off road. But Out of box RTR, its onroad.

I love running my Jato on just about anything I can get it onto, I must say though...If you get into grass with the Anacondas you might have to pick it up or give it a llittle push

Took it to a skate park and saw a friend of mine launch this thing 15 feet in the air and land perfectly. It was made to jump, but the suspension is too weak to handle the downward force of the landing. Result cracked engine block.
