Anyone else disappointed in the durability of their firestorm? So far I have gone through two diff gear sets, and a front bulkhead. Pretty lame.

Actually, just the opposite. I should have broken something by now, and have been ready to do so, but, after a near full speed head-on crash with a losi xxxnt, multiple cartwheels and big-air misques at the track, nothing but a cracked rear wing (I finished it off by hand). I am nothing short of amazed! Two diff gear sets is a bit fishy, and I'm guessing your slipper is probably too tight and your lsn may even be lean. The front bulkhead.... please be honest and let us know how that came about. Full speed assault on a mailbox? A big jump-turned "firestorm lawn dart" perhaps? Whatever the case, steel bends; the titanic sunk; and your PLASTIC and ALUMINUM 375 scale mph rc truck is, believe it or not, breakable! Expect it, and be more cautious if you are not prepared to fix stuff. My .02
My only complaint is that the servos are gutless, even for a stadium truck, (come on, it's a well priced rtr, what did I expect?!) I upgraded to a venom 6.0v hump pack, which helped, but, it still has a tough time keeping the wheels straight through the ruts at our local track, so a new servo is in the works. What has everyone been upgrading their servos with?
Thanx!

hey guys
i`m very happy with my storm.
i ran 3 quick tanks thur it in front of my house on street last friday.
i have yet to break anything. but i never ran into anything yet with it.
i did some upgrades right away before i even started it for the frist time.
steering servo hitec 645
t&b servo hitec 625
venom 1200 6v pack
venom fail safe
radio jr xr3i with a 135 RX
filled the diff with grease
roto start back plate. ( i got no luck with pull starters) LOL
fuel filter
heavier shock oil(50w) with mt2 blue springs
longer exh bolts. so i could add back up nuts.
sho glued a plastic piece under the battery tray(my wheelie bar)
i got just about a half a gallon thur it.
fun little truck if you ask me.
i would tell freinds to buy it.

Man, That LSN is a pain in the a** to get to. Whats up with that.

So has anyone found a sure fire way to tune the lsn, I don't really feel like bending a screwdriver to do it

Hey buggyman! What did you use for a fuel filter? I was thinking of either a big filter or a primer bulb to increase run time. Significant difference? How are the hitec servos working? Thanx!

those servo are working great.
the 645 for steering is great. it can turn the wheels. lock to lock without the truck moving no problem.
for a fuel filter. i found the smallest one i can find at my LHS and mounted right next to the carb.
i don`t like primer bulbs. they alway leak air.

Do the hitec 625 servo's & venom battery pack make a noticeable difference? because i was thinking of getting a pair of servo's & a battery pack.

the 625 is great. i can lock up the brakes easy. i can lock up the brakes and get the truck to drift to a stop with the 625. looks cool bringing the truck to a stop sideways right next to your feet.

RE: -=OFFICIAL HPI FIRESTORM THREAD=-
Hey guys, I have a few questions. Seems like a lot of you are very knowledgeable. I’ve had my Firestorm for about three weeks now. It’s my first Nitro R/C and I love the thing. I can’t believe the abuse it has taken. Especially from a newb.
Anyway, on with the questions: Some because I have conflicting opinions from the Firestorm manual and my local hobby shop, others because I’ve been doing this for only three weeks. Sorry for the long post.
I’m running O’Donnell 20% and a McCoy MC9 plug. I’m keep the HSN adjusted so I’m running at about 220-235F and the thing definitely moves out. But I’m not getting a wheelie what so ever with the 19 or 21 tooth gear. Is it my LSN setting? Is it the soft shock setting?
The manual says tighten the slipper clutch all the way, then back out 6 turns. My hobby shop guy said back out ¼ of 1 turn???
What weight grease should I use for the trans? Should the differential be different or even oil? Excuse my ignorance, but I use Royal Purple 75-140 for the differential in my car, could I use that?
How often do you tear down the engine, inspect, clean and put back together? Same with the trans?
Thanks for your input.

if you want to replace the diff then go ahead and tighten the slipper all the way, it will wheelie, but too many times and you will be down waiting on parts, its cool to see especially when new to the hobby...I was grinning ear to ear when my first savage finally wheelied...but that will pass once you replace a few trans parts...
tighten it all the way down and it will wheelie, pull the diff out and oil or grease it, use silicone diff lube only, or grease (not sure what to recommend)

RE: -=OFFICIAL HPI FIRESTORM THREAD=-
Welcome to the hobby! Addictive isn't it? With the factory slipper clutch/ lsn settings I couldn't wheelie either. As you can tell from my avitar, it has no problems now. The factory settings are awefully cautious.... slipper is loose and lsn is rich. If you want crazy wheelies you need to address at least those two issues, the third issue is to buy a spare battery box, as mine is shaved something fierce now! Take care when adjusting the lsn, however, it will not take much. Mine is probably about 1/8 in. An easy way to check this is to make sure you always have a smooth trail of smoke. Keep an eye on temp as well. 1/4 of a turn out on the slipper is probably a bit tight, but you will not know until it's too late, and your buying gears from the same fella that told you to do so, hmmmmm.? Mine is about 3 turns from seated. No problems so far on the dirt track or the paved oval. The grease in your cars diff is very different. Diff grease for r/c's is a silicone base instead of a petroleum base, and it's much heavier, measured in the 10's of thousands instead of 80w90 or 75w140. Good luck!

RE: -=OFFICIAL HPI FIRESTORM THREAD=-
I'm back into the 2wd Stadium Truck game. I just ordered the HPI Firstorm with roto start backplate for $249.00 total from ultimatehobbies.com. I used to race 2wd, but it was on a 1/8 scale track and it would cause a lot of breakage. Now we have a 1/10 scale track as well and a lot of people are buying 2wds again. It was between the Firestorm and the RC10GT2. I went with the Firestorm for two reason. It looks so sweet on the HPI website and there are already enough GTs at our track. I am excited about this truck. I already have 6v hump pack and metal high torque servos for it. I will add silicone to diff and loc-tite to the screws. I will post pics when it arrives.

hey jaywax
yes it should.
i`m using a jr 135 rx and it fits fines. i think the synthesized rx is only taller not fatter.
but there is room for taller rx`s in the radio tray. but i`m not 100% sure it will fit.

that a duel rate steering trim knob.
it will limit the throw on both front wheels.
try turning it and play with the wheel on the radio
and you will see what i`m talking about.

RE: -=OFFICIAL HPI FIRESTORM THREAD=-
What a fantastic forum and thread, got more info from here in 30mins than in 3 days of web searching
This is my first post so Hi to everyone
Had me Firestorm for a week now, just finished off my first litre of fuel
Really chuffed with the car, but have seen a few places where it could be better.
Firstly,
The shocks are softer than a marsh mellow man in hell
Any idea what oil is used as stock?
I've bought some 30wt and 50wt shock oil, will try the 30wt first.
Secondly,
It seems from reading others experiences that everyones else's servos are as weak
Have read that a few of you guys have swapped out the battery packs, which seemed to have helped a noggin, but i think i'll try some beefier servo's.
Have read that some have swapped out the stock servo's with Hitecs 645 and 625 hi torque servo's, do these still work with the stock receiver?
If i later decide to go for the Spektrum DSM will they still work with this system (sorry it might be a simple question but i'm new)
Lastly,
Took a trip down to my local supermarket car park the other day, loads of road cars and although i was able to leave most on the straights they stuffed me on the turns
Are our wheel mounts a stock size?
As in will other wheels and tires fit, like slicks?
Cheers

Boil your rim and tire to remove the old tires. Then you can buy any tire that is 2.2" wide (except buggy they are very narrow). Just look here at this link http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...O&FVSEARCH=2.2 . All of these tires will work except there is a couple of buggy tires that will not but they are so narrow it is obvious which ones they are.
