the spit test
 

I know a lot of people recommend getting a temp gun to keep an eye on their engine temps, but I just spit on my finger and touch the cooling head of the motor. If it instantly boils off, I know I'm running too hot. If it boils for a good amount of tmie, I know I'm good. Anyone else use this method?

I do but I don't spit. I just use a dropper (one drop of water) and then see how long it takes to boil away.

It's a good methode to get in the ball park, put if you want to know if your engine is 200 or 250 degrees, a temp gun is best. Duratrax makes one for only 20 bucks. My mom bought it for me too, cause I told her she could use it around the house. (for what, i don't know-maybe cooking).

ya spit is messy and its thicker (depends on the day) lol it dose boil off but u dont know if spit boils slower than watter i use a droper when i want to test my tune for the week and i use the spit if i think its a little to hot to know when to shut it off

i only use water (or if unavailabe spit) when my engines doing something really queer, other than that , i have an OS engine so it only needs to be tuned very rarely.

Any whether change can affect the tuning of any nitro engine. Unless the temperature, humidity and so on stay the same some retuning is necessary for a peak tune. Say you start running early in the morning and by the after noon the temperature changes 10 degrees this could affect your tuning. I just do not see spending $20 to $30 on a gallon of fuel and not willing to spend that on a temp gun that helps keep your expensive engine safe.
