Default How to get a Carbon Fiber look.

I am a beginner in painting bodies, I am in the process of painting my H2 hummer body, dont really know what to do with it yet. I am planning to paint it with silver becuase the decals are mostly dark (black), but I saw photos of a truck with a carbon fiber look, and I thought that looked awesome.

Can somebody give me an idea how to achieve this carbon fiber look, or will it be to complicated for a beginner?

You need a piece of screen and you lay it down and spray black down then pull up the screen and spray the light gray/silver works best in my expirience.

Go to Walmart and get that rubbery matting people use to line drawer's with. It's like 1/8"+1/8" squares. Like masterblaster17 says you have to spray the black first, that's very important. After you remove the matting you can shoot it with gray, silver, gold, metallic blue-green-red-whatever. The gold looks really good I think. Cut some of the excess plastic off the shell and try different colorers.

Yupp use the draw liner not a screen. A screen is to small and tight knit to get the desired effect that you will want. I use the large block pattern draw liner from hardware stores to do my carbon fiber backgrounds, its seems to come out the best. The last pic here of the blue hummer I did with the large block drawer liner just to give you an idea of the size to look for.

They have a smaller black pattern but it gets clogged up with paint pretty easy much like sceen will so I always use the large pattern.

I was adviced before when painting with different colors to start with lighter shade of color then darker colors go last. Is this true? or not always. For the carbon fiber look, do I have to start with the black, then silver?

69-GTO - Thats an awesome paint job on the hummer, one of a kind - how long did it take to finish?

As a rule you always try to paint the darker colors before the lighter colors. If you paint a light color first and then a dark color behind it then the dark color will show through the lighter color.

I like to do the black first when doing carbon fiber effects because the silver just comes out too bright and fake looking sometimes if you spray it first.

Thanks. That hummer body took me around 6 hours or so total including masking and cleaning.

Painting a r/c car body is different than paint anything "normal" as you are painting backwards inside the body. If you were paint a real car then yes lightest color first ..r/c car dark color first.

Later,
Tim

I googled Carbon Fiber Vinyl and saw some pics of it, it is like a decal, then I will by applying them on the outside of the lexan body, is this correct? or does the adhesive side of the vinyl looks the same as the opposite side?

Thanks
