Default Master's class report from 2011 Nats

I have some pics and standings from this years event which ended yesterday.
This year was the most competitive field that I have ever seen. I think there were 6 guys competing who had at one time won the event. George Asteris had to leave early due to health issues or it would have been even tougher for everyone.
We flew in the morning this year after many years of having flown in the afternoons. I'd have to say that I prefer the afternoons after getting a taste of flying in the AM. I found the visability and strange wind patterns to be a challenge I didn't anticipate. But fair is fair and we took our turn this year in the AM.
We had over 40 guys flying in the class which represents the largest class at the nats.
Here are the Final results posted yesterday and some pics to go along with them.
1st Rick Byrd He flew a Hacker Q80 11S motor driven Deja Vu
2nd Arch Stafford Neu Wind Pro 2M
3rd David Snow Neu/ Brenner Contra. Spark SBE
4th Tony Frak Neu/ Brenner Contra Onas
5th Chris Odom YS 170 Black Magic.... The only IC in the finals
6th Glen Watson Motor unknown sorry Integral E.
7th Joe Walker Pletty Envision
8th Stephen Byrd Neu Deja Vu
Sorry if I meesed up anything as I'm doing this from memory. Maybe someone else can reportthe results and scores.
All the flyers proved worthy of being in the finals. The competition was really tough and congrats to Rick for stepping up and winning.
Notes... David Snow had an ESCfail on the flight line in round 1
Also due to an extreme lack of people we were forced to have only 3 judges per flight. Normally we would use 5 per flight but the Worlds and the heat got to many and they left early.
Special big thanks goes out to Chip Hyde who loaned his WC finals plane to Mickey Losardo who had an unfortunate midair with Chris Moon on tuesdays practice. Mickey has never flown an electric plane before and actually did OK with it. Chip your a nice guy and a credit to the sport. Thanks for doing it.
Chris Moon built a new plane (Pegasus)on Tuesday afternoon/ evening from scratch with a ton of help from friends in his hotel room with out the aid of all the tools one would have in their workshops

Thank you for this report. I flew AMA Pattern many years ago, but never at the Master's level. Now I just fly for the pure joy of it, but still like to be informed on who and what's happening at the top level of our hobby/sport. CONGRATULATIONS to all the contestants. You guys are at the cutting edge of RC technology and the sport, and we all benefit from your knowledge and innovations. THANK YOU.
Best Regards

Some more random pics from the Matsers group.
By the way I judged the first round and 3rd in the finals yesterday and I think the results reflect pretty well what I saw.
Some random impressions. Chris Odom draws the most beautiful lines and presents his flight really well.
Rick's flying was really nice. Accurate and well done.
Archie flew really well the best I've ever seen him and seemed at his best under pressure.
Both Contra systems looked very capable and certainly flew good enough to win.
RustyFried did a wonderful jobrunning the event. The scores came out in a timely manner and the organization was terrific. Rustywas short handed all week what with the WC's stealing a lot of manpower from him yet never a hitch. Thanks Rustyfor doing a great job!
Mike Mueller
Pics Jon Carter and Tony Frak. Jon is the nicest man at the Nats. I look forward to seeing him every year.
Bobby, Mickey and I getting the Mick to flash his E Gang sign with his first entry to the dark side and Chip's WC finals plane.
Glen Watson, Arch's fugly shoes that match is pumpkin shirt. And the pits on finals morning.
Also Dave Lockhart getting his FAI winners award from Rusty. Congrats Dave and well deserved.

Thanks for the info Mike. Now it's my turn to go flying back to the Smaragd and the OS140RX. Ah the smell of Nitro. And i think i actually like cleaning the plane off. Still have to get the E-Motion back together.

So is Mickey going to be the next electric flier?

OK Rick I fixed the motor you used above. That explains why it was so quiet. Mike

Rick,

Heartiest of congratulations!

I have never seen you fly, but I've seen Arch fly at several contests - a couple of times in some pretty vicious crosswinds - and he made it look easy.

It is amazing how good all you top guys are! I would have been absolutely bewildered had I been sitting in a judge's chair.

Don't get too excited. I'm pretty sure that the "other" brand won all of the other classes (not sure what the Intermediate champion used, I think he borrowed an airplane but I'm thinking he flies JR or Spektrum).

Just one correction. I was running the Hacker Q80 11S.

Congratulations Ricky. Once I saw you were attending to fly Masters, I figured you to be right there in the end. I said so to the guys I fly with, here in the NE.

Good luck in F3A next year. I'm sure you'll move over there.

Thanks Matt!!! It was a tough battle for sure. I will be going back to F3A. After taking 10 years off from pattern. I was using this year to get back on my feet and learn the new equipment that is out there today.
