Mildura Australia S.A verses Vic's Contest

I have just finished a drive from Adelaide to Mildura today to compete in the annual South Australia verses Victoria Pattern Contest.
The weather looks like it should be good for the long weekend, may be just a bit cold, tomorrow I will dust off the Wind S Pro and get Some much needed practice in. I will add some updates via the new toy, an IPAD during the contest for those that are interested in following F3A across the pond.

Practice day today, started at 0730, fog moved in at the end of my second flight, then cleared away 15 minutes later.
Competition starts tomorrow, and I will take try to post some photos during the day.

RE: Mildura Australia S.A verses Vic's Contest

Day one at Mildura dawned cool, but with a high over cast so it was not as cold as yesterday. Two rounds were flown (one flight line only) for all classes, the first was in near calm conditions, before a light breeze came up blowing in on the flight line. I think the numbers were at 24 in total, and with the nice conditions there was some good flights from all, so the competition should be close. I don't seem to be able to upload photo's from my IPOD onto this site, so updates will have to be at the end of the day, one down, one and a half to go.

I like your judges setup. It got me thinking that the judges should be sitting at the intersection of the 60 degree box lines. Maybe we need two sets, one for the pilot and one for the judges. We'd have fewer out of box calls. What do you think?

Thats one thing that's always concerned me,for instance how is a left hand judge supposed to accurately guage whether a left hand maneuvre is out of box when he can't accurately determine where the box line is. Parralax is a tricky little thing to hold down.

yes, the parallax thing can be tricky, but an easy way to get around it is before the judge sits down, if they will go stand at the apex of the box (typically where the pilot stands), look down each box line and pick a point in the distance (quite a ways away) that lines up with the box line and use that reference for the box line they can't see, the parallax issues is basically eliminated. The judge may be sitting 10 ft away from the box line, however, using the reference point in the distance basically eliminates the fact the judge is not looking down the box line. It isn't perfect but I think it is better than trying to guess where the box line projects.

RE: Mildura Australia S.A verses Vic's Contest

Well Mildura 2012 has been flown and finished, today was a half day to allow for those who had to travel to get an early start on the road. I had to leave on my four hour drive before the results were announced, so I will need to get the final scores via email before publishing the results here in case I make an error, but what I can tell you is that the "Vic's" won the challenge (ouch !) and I managed a second place in Expert with a promotoin point to boot. There is a photo of the results of the first four rounds, with the last to be flown.

The weather today was about as perfect as you could hope for, although the day started with ice, this was from the clear sky over night, and it was sky clear all day with little to NO wind.

I took quite a few photo's to up load to give you a feel for the atmosphere there, which was fantastic, with the club cooking lunch, Glenn Orchard keeping steamed dim sims going all day, and the Nugent's opening their house up for a BBQ dinner Sunday night, oh and I took a better photo of the judges location to the centre line, which I beleive is standard around the world of F3A.
