"Building a Pattern Plane"
Okay everyone, I've been trying to find a copy of this book after seeing the website that no longer offers it for sale. It looks like it was a very good guide to setting up a plane for straight & true flight from the samples I've seen, but I have yet to actually get my hands on a copy to peruse. What I want to know is this: is the book as good as it appears to be? Yes, I'm asking for opinions here. I'm hoping to get a good idea of whether or not to continue my search for a copy of it. If it's not as informative as it seems to be from the website then I'd just as soon not waste any more time looking for it. Thanks to all for your thoughts about it!

RE: "Building a Pattern Plane"
This is as good a place as any to raise a clamor for this book to come back in print. I understand it went through four editions before it was dropped by the publisher. In these days of desk-top publishing, it's incomprehensible to me how a publication as uniquely valuable as this can go "out-of-print" when there is still a demand for it. I noted references to the book in various pattern threads, visited the website that showed us sample pages while telling us we were looking at a ghost. I dropped hints wherever I thought it might do any good that I would clean the garage for anyone who would lend me their copy long enough for me to take it to Kinko's. In a hobby like this, that thrives on the sharing of arcane knowledge, there's gotta be someone who will step up and help us!

Presumably a bookseller might track down a second hand copy?
If it's the book I think you mean, the copies are all sold out but the details are at

I have a copy of it and think it's a great resource (or will be when I get around to building one...). The fella, at our club, that I bought it from a year or two ago, may have more; he brought several to a meeting to sell. Give me a day or two to try to contact him and I'll see if he can help.

Runway, that's the website, and that's the book, but all the website tells us is the book is sold out, out of print, and the website is going off the web.

Hi Folks
As someone who owns a copy of this book and knows how good it is I am sad to hear it is going out of print because it is the best stack of cash I have spent on this hobby.
I would gladly let anyone have a look at it to copy but as I am in the UK I don't think I can help you.
But it is invaluable reading if you are trying to build a pattern plane. Bob Nolls Series of videos are also excellent.

Thanks to FlianBrian for the tip on a copy! I've got the $$$ headed off for it in the morning mail and am really looking forward to being able to peruse it at my leisure. Yes, the website makes you really want a copy of it & then tells you "can't touch this"! It'll be nice to end the frustration...

Yeah!
I've seen this too, and can't believe the "out of print" thing. If the people involved don't care about sales, then they should have someone do a PDF version and just give it away. If they DO care, they should still have someone do a PDF version, and let us buy and download it online. They might be surprised how much they could profit.
Information is everything to us today, and I agree that something this "classic" shouldn't just fade away.

Not sure if it still is going to happen but some people on the NSRCA discussion list were working on getting it on line for download, you may want to post your question on that list and see what the status of the project is. I think it will be down loadable from the NSRCA website when they are done.

The forums on the NSRCA website (http://www.nsrca.com/Forums.asp) looks dead to me. The last post was November last year.
Anyway I posed the question, let's see if someone answers.

I thought I had a spare copy lying around, but have not managed to locate it yet. Try - bruce [email protected]. - He and Don Attwood wrote it. They have always been very helpful and I am sure Bruce would help you get a copy, somehow. It´s a great book to have, even if you are like me and hav´nt got around to actually building one yet!!
