1st Annual Bear Mountain Flyers Pattern Showdown Arvin, CA
#26
Many thanks and congrats to the Bear Mountain Flyers on the great success that was the 2015 Wild West Pattern Showdown. We were blessed with excellent weather and 40 contestants. I want to thank BMF for the honor and privilege of bringing the CPA brand of classic pattern to Arvin, and for treating it like what it is- pattern- and not a side show. The best part for me was seeing the coming together of various parties that had been distant, the relationships are far more valuable than the airplanes. Thank you for making us feel welcome, and I look forward to many more good times in the days ahead.
Best regards,

I'd like to say thanks to all the folks who welcomed me at the Bear Mountain Flyers Pattern Showdown. I have not been to a pattern meet or have picked up a transmitter in over 20 years and felt right at home. They have an excellent field and the contest was run first rate. Seemed like a good turnout with "classic" pattern having their own spot in the line up. Apparently "classic" is where my head is, because it was the only class I recognized! Got to talk to a couple people I used to compete with back in the day, wandered up and down the flight line looking at the "new" hardware.
Well run contest, great people, brought back a bunch of good memories. Well Done!

I must echo all of the thanks! Leon and the BMF club, Steve Lampert, Peter Vogel for his incredible scoring work, Dale and all who cooked and contributed to the Saturday night dinner, Jon B. for the way cool T-shirts... The list goes on! A special thanks to all who judged (especially to those who judged Masters and Intermediate - the "big" classes)
Truly a great contest and a real "event"!

On behalf of the Bear Mountain Flyers and everyone involved in producing the contest, thank you for your support and appreciation. I am privileged to speak for those who contributed their time and effort to produce a truly first class event.
In my relatively brief time flying pattern, I can’t remember another event which benefitted more from the selfless participation of such a diverse group than we did. It was, as Robert Fish so eloquently stated in a previous post, a “coming together” and it should give us all great personal satisfaction to have been a part of that process.
That we were able to combine several days of perfect weather, a first class flying facility, great food & drink, and 40 participants committed to indulging in their love for pattern flying was spectacular. As was the camaraderie shared by the attendees, as bridges were built and bonds were forged.

Please join me in thanking the following people for their invaluable contributions:

Leon Robison, Sean Mersh, Jon Carter, Dale Olstinske, Frank Capone, Robert Fish, & Jon Bruml.
Planning:
Leon Robison, Gary Banducci, Sean Mersh, Jon Carter, Robert Fish, Dale Olstinske, Jon Bruml, Frank Capone, & Jerry Budd.
Field Preparation & Maintenance:
Dave Hilton
Contest Apparel:
Jon Bruml
Event Logistics:
Leon Robison, Jon Carter, Robert Fish & Paul Stringer.
Scoring:
Peter Vogel
Additional Contributors:
Chef Dale Olstinske, Kirt Campbell, Frank Capone, Gary Banducci, Sean Mersh, Jennifer & Robert Fish, Jean & Mike Greear, Jamie Schoolcraft & Jim Oddino.
Event Sponsors:
Tower Hobbies, Samy’s Camera, Tru-Turn, Progressive R/C, Esprit Model, Pacer Technologies, ThunderPower, F3A Unlimited, Jaccio, Bob Smith Industries, Hobbico, BJ Craft, House of Balsa, and the Hampton Hotel in East Bakersfield.
And let us not forget to extend a very special note of appreciation to Patrick Farr, whose generous support of our contest was made in memory of his son, who was lost in Iraq in 2006.

Looking ahead, we are already thinking about our 2016 contest. Among other changes, we are debating whether to expand our facility to more easily accommodate three flight lines. Moreover, in the wake of the success of this event, the club has already been approached by an international caliber sponsor interested in working with us to create a “West Coast Nats” for F3A pattern !
These are exciting times, so please stay tuned, there is plenty more to come.
Thank you again for your support and participation.
Thanks Sean for this great Photo......

One more thing... For those of you who did not receive your complementary shirt when you registered at the contest (or wish to order additional shirts @$15/ea.) please send an e-mail to with "t-shirt" in the subject line. Be sure to indicate the quantity and size you need. We should have them available at the Victorville contest or sooner by mail.

Great Contest Steve, Leon + Jon Carter.
Scores are available online, with analysis at http://www.patternscoring.com, look for the AMA scores in the 2015 Arvin Wild West Showdown in the left nav menu and Classic scores in the Arvin Wild West Classic item in the left nav menu.
I'm pleased to say we ran the entire HUGE AMA contest with Scott Smith's Master Scoring program and my electronic scribe working seamlessly together. Thanks to the size of the contest I did discover some scaling issues with the scribe->Master Scoring Adapter->Master Scoring->Master Scoring Adapter->PatternScoring.com process toward the end of the contest and I'll be resolving those in the next few days. The impact was minimal (judges noticed saving scores took a few moments longer than usual on a few occasions) but a good caution to me that I need to revamp a few things.
Apologies for the classic contest going to paper, this was the first time the scribe had ever been used with the pre-novice pattern being flown and there was a long-standing error in the data for pre-novice that was causing the scribe to crash. Since Pre-novice flew first on one line and the issue that was happening was not clear to me yet, I made the call to fall back to paper to keep the contest moving at full speed and not risk losing any scores. Classic Advanced scores for the first round were delivered electronically, but after that we went to paper.
Thanks to everyone for your patience in the early hours of Saturday as we got things squared away.

Hi Peter,
Great work with the scoring and scribe integration you have developed. I certainly see it as must for pattern in general moving forward.
I am interested to hear if there has been any noticeable change in judges behavior in scoring since using this system. I can certainly see how it will remove in part the impression judging factor we have always dealt with in the past. From a statistical sense has there been more or less variation in scores btw judges and are scores generally lower or higher at a comp where this type of system is used.
Great work look forward to hearing more about it.
Regards,
Peter P

I've been meaning to do an analysis at a true statistical level. From an observational level, I'd say scores dropped fairly noticeably across the board by 1-2 points overall as the system was introduced. Several judges noted their surprise the first few contests at how much lower the scores were when they were clicking on the defects as they saw them rather than writing a score down as a maneuver was completed.
What I cannot say is how much "compensation" has happened as people in the district here have started getting used to scoring by clicking downgrades.

Thanks Peter
I will be interesting to see your statistical analysis once you get more data. A more consistent approach to judging is the holy grail IMHO to getting more people involved or returning to pattern.
