Ever since the unfortunate and untimely passing of Gus Ozols, owner/operator of Salient Designs, plans for the Boxer series of aircraft have been hard to come by. Luckily Gus's good friend and flying buddy, Rick Allison, has purchased the rights to the Boxer designs and has started up his own company called Salient R/C. Details and contact information are as follows:

Plan sets for all the Boxer sizes are $42.00, plus $8.00 S&H. Muffet sets are $35.00, plus the same S&H. Most plan sets run to 7-8 sheets, include a 30+ page construction manual, and are PLOTTED (not printed or copied) on 20 lb. bond. All sets are shipped rolled in a mailing tube, and delivery is via UPS ground. Those interested can call 425 427 8647, or e-mail Rick Allison at [email protected].

For those looking for Boxer information:

The Boxer design comes in four different sizes; 45, 60, 90, & 120. The Boxer series of aircraft are plans built balsa fuselage and foam core wing and stab. The stated goal of the original company, Salient Designs, was to provide state-of the art aircraft in an affordable package that an average builder can construct.

One of the strengths of the Boxer design is that they are very economical, easy to build and are rugged which provides a bid advantage for fliers in entry or lower level pattern classes. Rather than spend money for an expensive pattern plane kit, the flier can use his money for better radio equipment or engine components.

These planes have proven repeatedly to be contest winners, therefore have witnessed ever increasing popularity. Rick Allison won the District 8 FAI Championship in the early 90's. Just recently as two years ago, the Intermediate category at the 2002 NATS was won by a Boxer 60!!

Can someone who has plans, or one of the planes tell me the specifics on the aircraft? Are the wings plug in, is it show with fixed or retracts etc?

Muffets are shoulder wing designs for the flier who wants to relax, have fun, and maybe experiment with floats, on-board cameras, flaps and other funky stuff. The airfoils, constant chord wing and long moments provide exceptional tracking and stall characteristics. Its basically a "utility" plane to have fun with!!

Boxer 60;

Wing area: 800 squares
Wing span: 63 inches
Fuse length: 65 - 1/2 inches

Boxer 90;

Wing area: 818 squares
Wing span: 67 inches
Fuse length: 66 - 3/4 inches

Boxer 120;

Wing area: 928 squares
Wing span: 69 inches
Fuse length: 73 - 3/4 inches

All Boxer designs are one piece wing and show retract installation. However I've seen a Boxer 120 with fixed carbon gear and looks pretty sharp!! Check out checksix Boxer a couple post above.

You asked:

Yes,... I've seen (or heard of) a Boxer 120 with the O.S. 120 Surpass. Just keep in mind, these planes were designed with the fuel tank located on the CG; therefore a pump is required to supply fuel to the engine. In such case, I'm assuming you are talking about the pumped version of the 120 Surpass.

From the specs listed above, the Boxer 120 is NOT a two meter bird; therefore (if built light) a 120 Surpass should provide adequate power. However I assume most Boxer 120's are being flown with a YS 120.

As far as the other sizes are concerned,...

Recommended engines for the Boxer 60 are YS61RE or OS 61RE, however the Boxer 60 can also be fitted with a non-pumped or non-piped 60-70 two cycle engine, (relocation of the fuel tank would be required).

The Boxer 90 was designed with the intention of utilizing the (then new) Saito 91 (with the Saito 120's pump system), or the YS 91. The intent was to use the "stock" mufflers that come with these engines resulting in a substantial cost savings.

The specs on the 120 size look about right for a good .91 2 stroke if built lite enough.

Sorry,... just realized that I never gave the weights of the Boxers. The advertised weight of the 120 is 9 - 1/4 to 10 pounds

As far as the other Boxers are concerned:

The Boxer 90 has a listed weight of 7 - 1/2 to 8 pounds; while the B-60 is projected at 7 -1/4 to 8 pounds.

Hope that gives you more information you can use to make a decision.

That's a big jump from the 90 to 120.
I emailed Rick Allison and he said that Precision Aero Comp. was going to do cores for him as soon as he sends them the templates.

I've got a set of old original Boxer 60 honeycombed cores and plans hanging around from my pattern days. I have been considering building it as an electric as of late. With good wood selection and LiPo batteries, I wonder if it might be feasible. I have a 6.7:1 geared Hacker B50-10L lying around, but would likely have to switch to the 5.2:1 ratio for this application. I may have to run some numbers to investigate.

Any inputs?

I know Rick Allison was having Precision Aero Composites cut the cores for him. Which Boxer are you interested in?? If you're leaning toward the Boxer 60,... I have it on pretty good authority that the Cursor cores are identical to the Boxer 60. And I know that Maureen at PAC already has the Cursor templates!!

As far as an Electric Boxer,... I know Gus Ozols mentioned that a couple Boxer 45 were electrified with pretty good results. That was back in the mid 90's, and electric technology has come a long way since then. Therefore I wouldn't doubt that an electric B-60 wouldn't be to far out of reach.

Unfortunately I have no experience with electric power, therefore I'm not the person to ask. My Rick Allison has seen some of his flying buddies experiment with electric Boxers. Feel free to drop him a line at [email protected]

I believe the new YS 110 (built on the .91 frame) would fly a Boxer 1.20 very well if good care was taken with wood selection. It would make a nice model for competition up through Advanced class.

For all that are interested, I've uploaded some shots of my Miss Muffet. I designed the Muffet around '95, and bunches of them are still flying and being built here in the Pacific Northwest. I let Gus have the design for the Salient catalog, and now that I own the business, I've got the Muffet back. FYI, Muffet is an acronym that stands for Multi Use Fun Flying and Educational Tool. The one in the pics is the original .60 size (900sq. in.), with a Saito .91 aboard. Muffets will do amazing things, and are both very aerobatic and rock-stable, depending on dihedral and radio set-up. They make great trainers (that won't bore you to death while your student learns to fly), and great float planes. They've been used for camera work, aero-towing, and Sportsman Pattern. They use the same basic NACA Series 6 airfoil as the Boxer series (and the original Cursor, Meridian, Python, and Olympian), but are made semi-symetrical by the addition of a 2% mean camber line. They use the original Cursor nose and tail moments.

For eveyone's information, the Boxer 90 is still being updated, and as soon as that's finished, I'll post here. The Muffet will be next in line, starting with the .60 size. I apologize for everything taking so long, but each "update" takes about 40-50 hours or so to accomplish, and I only have so much time. Gus was using some fairly old and esoteric software in addition to an older version of AutoCAD, and there are lots of "garbage" symbols on the plans that must be removed/converted one at a time, which is very tedious. There are also many items on the original plans that are no longer available, and each construction manual is about 35 pages long.

PAC has the templates for the B-60 and B-120 foam cores (and the templates are furnished with the plans if you want to cut your own). Dean Pappas and I both think that the Boxer is a natural for electric power. Per Dean's uggestion, I'd use Jason's setup (which has been published just about everywhere but Vogue magazine) so far as motor and controller, and downsize the prop and batteries accordingly for the 60, 90 and 120. If you don't have a lot of electric experience, you would have to run MotorCalc to see about where you want to go with each size. I'd also pay very close attention to the wood selection and honeycomb the wings. The open pipe tunnel would be the perfect place to just hang the battery pack(s) out in the wind for cooling, and you could easily work out a way to change packs without removing the wing.

Over the next year, I hope to be able to do a complete 2M Boxer redesign and a dedicated electric pattern model.
