New virtual caller app for iPhone (and NOW, ANDROID TOO)
Ever want to practice a new sequence but your buddy hasn't shown up to the field to call for you?
I had a little time this weekend so I wrote a quick app for the iPhone to solve that problem for me.
I had a little time this weekend so I wrote a quick app for the iPhone to solve that problem for me.
Check out the quick demo video below and let me know what you think! Suggestions, etc. welcome. If you are interested in beta testing let me know and I'll set it up. The sequences are pulled from the same cloud that drives the D7/D8 scoring app's knowledge of the sequences so when they are updated in the cloud (as I just did for Advanced and Masters) they are updated for all uses instantly.

RE: New virtual caller app for iPhone (and NOW, ANDROID TOO)
Very cool Pete!!!
Only recommendation is to make the speaking voice less robotic sounding...
So I understand this is only for the iPhone/iPad? Any thoughts about creating a version for the Android? If so Iwould be interested in Beta for it...
Cheers,

Unfortunately there's no API access to Siri's text to speech (and Siri depends on a live internet connection) for a less robotic voice, and the TTS libraries available for the iPhone that have less robotic voices aren't cheap (about $325) so I have a hard time justifying the cost unless I make a paid version of the app with better voices that I can sell to at least 100 people. If there's sufficient interest once I crank this through the Beta process and the Apple store I'll do it (the demo version of the libraries I tried definitely had a much better voice).

I'll look into the Android option, but my time is limited, so no promises as to when on the Android option.
In the meantime, folks who followed the tester recruit link as of about 8:10am PDT this morning have been added to the beta list and for those who went through the TestFlight device connect process I've uploaded a build that will allow your device to install it. If you are interested in trying the app out, go here: http://tflig.ht/15Ey3DA , sign up as a tester and then go through the device connect process on your device as described in the test flight welcome e-mail and I'll get a build up to support you as quickly as my paying commitments will allow :-)

Hey, great job Peter!
Just a couple weeks ago Imentioned to Rex about your judging App, and that a calling App should be done by someone.
Ihave Android too, though.
Thanks for the efforts! This will be terrific!

++1 for Android version.
This is why I have a problem with Apples' policy. You ought to be able to make a simple app without spending a lot of money. If I decide to sell it, sure charge me the regular, albeit ridiculous fee. But why charge me the same rate to build it for a few freinds.

I don't have to spend any money to make this app, and it won't cost me anything to list it on the App Store. If I do decide to charge for it (I'd likely do a free 'lite' version and a paid full version with better text to speech and a few other goodies) then they, like google, would get 30% of what I charge.

Thanks for the positive words folks!
Quick update I'm working on adding schedule editing and local storage of personal schedules, as soon as I have the project back into a releasable state (which may or may not mean schedule editing will be available, though the underpinnings of it will be in place) I'll do another build that will include the recently signed up beta testers.
I'll start looking at Android once I have schedule editing in place, given that there's a contest this weekend I probably won't get to look at that until next week at the earliest.

Quick status update as I know there are a fair number of folks waiting to get their first beta build since they joined after my most recent build before I started surgery to allow local schedules to be defined. The good news is I made some major progress tonight with a good UI paradigm for managing your personal schedules, but I have one or two more UI views to implement to complete the process, so it will most likely be tomorrow evening before I get another build published. You'll also be able to copy the standard schedules so you can customize the calling for your schedule to your preferences (i.e. if you want to call it a "stop sign" instead of an "eight-sided loop", you can!

I just uploaded a build to TestFlight that supports everyone who signed up on TestFlight with an iOS device ID. This build supports creating your own schedules, testers, let me know what you think!
Android folks, I was at the mall today for a haircut and I bought myself a little toy, a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 2 7.0 (P3113) :-)
I'm curious, how many of you are running devices with Jelly Bean or that are upgradeable to Jelly Bean? Ice Cream sandwich requires an internet connection to use voice recognition, but Jelly Bean will do it locally.
Thanks

I'd like to try it from my IPod. Can anyone help figure out how to download and install it to an IPod?

Sal, I assume you mean an iPod Touch? If so, connect to a wifi network and follow the beta link above on test flight.
