Protech Onyx 140 ARF
I need as much informations on ONYX 140 ARF F3A airplane.
Company distribute this plane is Protech from Belgiau.
Is it good for competition?
Is somebody compete with him? What are the results?
Could this plane have a place for the tunePipe inside the fuselage?

Check out the website at www.protech.be .I have just bought one second-hand for next year's competition season. The person from whom I bought it found that the YS four stroke did not suit. I fly two stroke only in competition (currently a Webra 145 in a Caprise), but I intend putting an OS 140 into the Onyx.

What about the other questions I asked,
Is this plane could compete against the other planes?
Is it have a place on the bottom for Tune pipe?
Do I could make the elevator disconnect?
How about the covering?

this is the manual i think....the plan has the pipe under in a chanel and are complet covred in oracote ...about flying ..i dont know!

BELIVE ME.
Is a very good airplane.
The price is acceptable (i paid in spain 480 Euros more or less 400$)
Is a good relation quality price.
Only some things that must be replaced landing gear, spinner...

The plane flies great and could compete against other, the only think is that with YS 140l is a little heavier.
For elevator standart is a kato clone but the elevator are single and if you wont to put 2 servos, mount it.
Regarding tunnel pipes : is enormeus, is made like a g-trick completely open on underside, and for covering a standart job but with a great film : oracover
For those who want mount an YS on this model simply rebuild the motor mount . It' not difficult and you must use a sheet of 5mm plywood.

I've one also with a YS120FS.
What is the total weight of yours?. Mine is actualy 5.2 Kg[img][/img]. I'll try to replace the wing tube and the undercarriage? What do you think ?

my is 4.850 with stock undercarriage and wing tube.i think if i switch to a FZ140-2 i've save another 100-150gr because they don't need a tuned pipe.ive planned to change the gear with a carbon unit but considering the price of the model is a non sense.this is an entry level f3a plane so don't spend a lot of money on it.make a lot of practice and when you are ready swicht to another plane.Totally i've made 110-120 flight with this plane using a old YS140L on it and the only failure is the undercarriage plate so reinforce it.On the other hand the onyx fly well and even in p-03 and p-05 is a good learning plane. the 3rd pics is my new f3a plane a Rhapsody from www.f3alorenz.de

I use Cool Power 30% Heli fuel.
My ONYX Cool painting was attacked by the fuel !!![:@]
What can that happen in an F3A ARF Kit like taht one.?

I'm still waiting for a modified header to arrive as the standard rise is not high enough. Another club member has been using 17x12 APC so I'll probably start there. That said I have found a 15x13 three blade quite successful on a Webra 145 and I may try that as well on the OS.
When the header does arrive, and I get to fly the OS I'll post observations here

This aeroplane looks extremely similar to the Piedmont Focus. Real close... even the construction details around the firewall, bellypan area and undercart. I've got a strange feeling somebody isn't being completely truthfull here.

We're not involved. The Onyx is a so-so copy of our original Focus, though they obviously don't know Pattern design since they can't come up with an original airframe. Anyway, we moved on to the Focus II, coming out this month. They'll never completely figure it out. Too many refinements, some major, others subtle, to catch them all. I know who's responsible, but there's not enough money in Pattern to bother suing anyone. And, the guys across the pond are getting a cheap plane, so what the heck...it's good for the sport.

Hi all,
could someone who has built the Onyx tell me how they have secured the wing joining tube to stop the wing moving sideways? There appears to be a hard point on the top surface of the wing at a point which ties up with the end of the tube, however Protech assure me that there are NO hardpoints in the wing. Even if it is a hardpoint for securing the tube, it seems strange to have it on the top surface of the wing.
Your experiences and any solutions found would be gratefully received!

I've done two oval holes in the aluminium tube were fits the top wing screws. These allow the wing be secure, haven't any chance to get out sideways.
