RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Hi Mola,
What is your opinion for mintor 170 for relaibility and power especially compared to ys 140dz and os 140rx. My impact is on its way, and it will be my first 2x2 pattern and I do not want to go wrong with the powerhouse. By the way do you have an opinion about the suitable header for 170 (30 or 60 mm rise) for impact.
thanks.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
There are the obvious carbon props, spinners and tuned pipes - can't think of much else you could do in carbon?
Was there anything specific you had in mind??

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Are you guys planning to isolate the gas engines in any way?
What pipes are you planning to use?
Im continuing to muse the possibilities and have drawn some mount plates to use with isolators similar to what gator uses on their "soft n safe"

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Hi Alpsat,
Regarding the reliability of the 3M-170, it has the same issue as the other pattern 2-stroke glow engines, that is the rear bearing corrodes easily. In the OS-140RX a replacement sealed bearing is available, but I don't think that is the case for the 3M-170. The 3M-170 uses a special rear bearing with two rows of balls next to each other. I believe Boca can deliver sealed bearings for the Webra 145/160 engines.
The 3M-170 has more power than the OS-140RX, but I don't know how it compares to the YS-140DZ as I have never operated one... The excessive fuel consumption and 30% nitro fuel scared me off...
I'm not sure about the header rise, but in my experience the 60mm rise fits most of the modern models...
As I said earlier I would not hesitate to recommend the OS-140RX for any of the current F3A models, but I think the ZDZ 40RE experiment is very interesting. Let us know how it turns out Mark and Dick!!! I hope it will be possible to keep the 5 kg weight limit.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Mark, glad you're going to have a go with the ZDZ 40. I've been thinking about doing a similar thing for some time, but have other constraints on my available time. Got the idea from Dick in the first place, have several of his previous pattern designs and a very nice Staudacher complete with ZDZ 40. My son Steve never really got into IMAC but quite often fly will the current FAI schedule with this model. We have found the ZDZ 40 an excellent, light weight motor, easy to set up and completely reliable. We have a KS exhaust system at the moment which works well with the motor. It may be a starting point to look at their other pipe setups for F3A. By the way, I've got Dick's excellent notes on setting up ZDZ engines if you need them. Let me have your e-mail address or contact me or Steve through the GBR/CAA.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Hi John,
Thanks for the kind offer. My e-mail is [email protected] . Glad to hear that you're so happy with the ZDZ40 now that I've ordered one
I think I'm going to have to go for the ES Composite pipe rather than the KS pipe in an effort to keep the weight down. Do you know what the KS pipe weighs?? Or do you have a cannister type muffler??
BYoung,
I am going to be using the rubber isolator washer mounts that ZDZ sell.
Rgds,
Mark

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
How about the need for a nose ring with this setup/mount? Would imagine it'll be impossible because of the magnetic pick-up.
I've never had any success with that type of rubber/iso' mounting before... interesting to see how you guys get on... it's a very interesting post.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Joe,
I discounted the 3W28 due to the lack of power. Last thing I wanted was to be short of grunt! The SM30 is another option but I wanted to be sure I always had more than enough power so opted for the ZDZ40 plus I knew very little nor could I find much out about the SM30

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
I am concerned about lack of cf cloth in engine compartment of Impact to suport a zdz40re engine. The Abbra has cf cloth all throught engine compartment and especially where firewall is installed. the Impact has no cf cloth forward in engine compartment. I would glue in a 5" strip of cf cloth to strengthen this area and spread the load.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
the escomposites.com carbon fiber gas pipe I plan to use on my Impact is 2 feet long and has an angled stinger. The only way to install this pipe is to slide it back into tail from top canopy just past rear wing support rod. let it drop then push it forward and hook it to coupler just under where the tank is mounted. which means you cannot use the floor provided in kit to mount tank and rudder servo as directed. the tank can be mounted on rails so it can be quickly removed and you can get to coupler to attach and disconect easily. I will mount rudder servo in tail to offset weight of engine, however you can put it forward of rear wing tube - you can remove servo arm with wires attached to get pipe in and out. I will mount my receiver and batt at side of fuse rather than on a plate so pipe can be swapped easily.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Mark, how are you getting on with the build? If anyone can comment what the average power to weight can or should be for a 2X2 pattern ship please chime in. 1.5 to 1? I got a used 3W24/pefa canister. I might have to build something. !~) AUW for the whole powersystem prop and spinner included is 4lbs even. Seems the impact is coming in at slightly different weights from the factory.

Hey Joe,
It's going quite slowly but you can check out the build thread at www.composite-arf.co.uk if you haven't already been doing so?
Rgds,
Mark
