Great job on the design. I made some modifications to give it a retro look and improve the flight envelope. Added retracts too! The retro look is a hot design direction with all the designers today and I predict that the concept will start impacting R/C too. At least I’m hopeful it will!

Great retro look!!! Looks like a low wing trainer, in my opinion i would move a little foward the wing and put it more close to the cabin, but is just my opinion

IMHO and no disrespect intended, if you put a taper wing on a Lanier Stinger you would think was the mother of all the newer pattern designs. I would say that Bubba was way ahead of his time with the Stinger and should be considered the father of the modern pattern aircraft designs. Waiting for retro!

Yes, The design of the Stinger looks a lot to modern pattern airplanes. Mine was not base on the Stinger.

Mato,

I like the the first design MUCH better than the second. I have to respectfully disagree with 8178. I know that you are in love with older pattern planes, and I think that some of them are really sexy myself. However, pattern has changed, alot. That design you proposed would be better for SPA events, not newer pattern style flying. And as much as I think older pattern planes are lookers, I absolutely love the newer planes. So....

I made some changes myself. These are not real radical, but they are there.

1. I raised the engine up some and made the spinner bigger, the other one was a little small.

2. The fuselage was enormous, so I slimmed it down a little.

3. The rudder was a bit large, scaled that down as well.

4. Moved the horizontal stab back

5. Changed the landing gear a little

These are small changes, I think you were right on with your design. Good luck with it!

Yes, I understand about the origin of your fine design and there are other R/C aircraft during the appearance of the Stinger that look somewhat similar. I use the Stinger as the benchmark design because it was immensely popular and zillions of them were sold in many different sizes. It was a total departure from the classic Tipo, Curare, Phoenix, etc. designs of the time and flew slowly and looks very much like today’s pattern designs. So I see a lot of Stinger in all the newer pattern aircraft. Not that it’s a bad thing, it’s just a Bubba thing! Thank goodness many of the classic pattern aircraft are still available.

Well, thanks for your time to reply my post. First of all I agree with you Ryan, also I understand why 8178 said, he was refering that all today's designs has something of old pattern planes, and the one that looks similar is the Stinger.

I think that the changes that you made were very good, and make this design a lot more interesting. I will have in mind the new changes, thaks for your commentaries

Maybe I'm blind, but I still don't see the resemblance between a stinger and practically any modern pattern plane. I'm still looking.....uh no, I just don't see it. It has fixed gear and a large fuse, but other than that, um.....

Dang I must need glasses or something if all you guys see it.

I'm still looking though.

-Mike

PS Dangit I STILL don't see it.

But Mike, you are wearing those very dark silver coated Georgia sunglasses like we all wear around here! Anyway, it’s my theory and I’m sticking with it. I like the idea that one of our own Georgia boys invented the modern pattern aircraft.

I'm afraid I don't see it either. The Stinger doesn't look like any pattern
ship I've ever owned. Phil Kraft said the Ugly Stick had the same moments
as his Kwik Fli but that sure doesn't make it a pattern ship.

I like the changes made by Mr. Smith....it does look like a Brio to me too though...that's a good thing. I like the whole process of drawing, refining, building, refining, & finally flying. I'm working on a new version of my first pattern design and I must say it's still feels as rewarding as building the first.

Good luck & keep us posted.

tph1,

I decided to go with a double taper and less wing area than previously. I also changed the tip thickness from my original. I drew up the new wings and stabs myself and cut the cores. If you were to avoid cutting foam and you could get a set, Temptation cores would be a close match.

Hi Flyintexan,

where did you get your CAD YS140L?? That would be a really useful item for me to have as I have drawn up a few planes in my time and it would be good to be able to ensure the engine fits before committing scalpel to balsa!!

Any files of the 91/110 too? Especially useful for my latest 1.7m model I'm putting together.

Thanks.

James

Weather permitting I’m going for a ride in a Yak 52 next week! I’ll let you know if a full scale Tipo would be more fun when I get back. It’s a darn tail dragger but it does have retracts. As I recall the retracts are pneumatic, I guess they would be Yak-Airs!
