RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*

    Hi Mike

Can you please measure the bottom of the under belly front and rear templates for me and also the front and rear of the rear turtle deck templates. At the very base not where the foam core outlines are.

    Thanks

    Troy

    Hi everyone

I have just finished my carbon fiber laminated nomex firewall for the Black Magic, I still have to cut and shape it came out about two thirds the weight of the liteply at the same size and quite a bit stronger. Will post more later when they come out of the press

    Hi Troy,

Please give us the specs on the material you used (weight of carbon cloth, thickness of nomex, finished weight). What engine are you hanging on that firewall, 2c or 4c???

    thanks mate, dean

Well, Mike has done an outstanding job on these planes! They are very nicely done. I did not appreciate how huge this airplane would be. It makes my Silhouettes look small. I can't wait to get them in the air. Hopefully soon, I'll get some pictures up and list the equipment I'm using. This is a sweet plane!

Now you didn't think I'd let it out of here without taking pics, did you? [8D]

Sorry, I was in such a hurry last night, I just forgot to download them. It was after 8 and I needed to get out of here or I wouldn't have been there till midnight. I went to bed about 1 last night, and didn't get out of bed until 7 tonight LOL. Geez I am tired.

But anyway, here's some more sneak peeks and they give a better idea of what the V2 really looks like (before graphics and such, Emory has some really cool stuff for these planes!). Anyway this is one of the electric twins. The real news is the weight. I don't know what they'll end up being, but they will be really light for electric planes. You guys that have seen it in person, wouldn't you agree this thing is about the same size as PL Partner? If it were glow, it would be around or even under 9 lbs. makes ya wonder.

Anyway assuming the owner doesn't mind, here's a few shots right before delivery.

Now I have to put mine together!

So Emory, when ya gonna change that pic on your avatar?

hehe. Seriously, have fun with them. Better yet, win with them. It was my pleasure building them. I do so love a challenge, and those were exactly that. I wish i would have had more time to detail and really finish them up for you, but hey, now I can get mine in the air soon. Notice all the planes in my shop are taken apart? I really need something to fly, Ocala is in 2 weeks and I think I've burned maybe 2 gallons since last August. maybe by the end of the week I'll have one ready to test fly.

oh well, Ocala will be fun, no matter how bad I suck. After all, I have until July to practice for the Nats!

    Enjoy,

BTW for future reference, use more weight on the wing cores. I put about 200 lbs or more on mine each. Makes them bond really well in leiu of a vacuum. Which is my next major purchase...

That is all the "weight" I had on hand, about 100 lbs. per panel. I need to get some sand bags, I guess. They came out nice and straight, I also used a litte 2" foam roller to help spread the epoxy after I squeegeed out the goo.

I think my wing panels came out fairly light at 9.25 oz trimed. I am back on my fuses tonight, hope to get three framed up in short order. I am cutting new formers right now.

I have forward fuse doublers all figured out now, a litte extra DZ beefing is needed to tame that thumper. Should have pictures of that soon. I've also made some jig improvements.

yea - vacuum bagging would be nice, keep us posted on what equipment you get. I am going to get a "feather cut" wing machine as my next big shop purchase. oh, I am looking at spray guns, tell us what spray painting equipment your using.....

    thanks Mike!

Spray equipment, simple: Sata Minijet 3 or 4. Digital is the best, but I can't paint well enough to justify it (yet!!!!)

I know some people who have had great success with the HVLP sprayers from Home Depot. But they feel nothing like the Sata. You get what you pay for. But you can really lay a nice finish with these if you practice a little and get it adjusted right.

Compressor: all you can get. Minumum 15 gallon tank, with filters and a dryer inline with the gun. A regulator at the gun is nice too, you'd be suprised how much drop in pressure you can get if you just use one at the compressor.

And of course, a full respirator and a well ventilated paint booth. I'm using the roll up one that was featured in MA a few months back. When I get a bigger shop I'm going to set up a "for real" paint booth.

They'll be done tomorrow, then I'm off to Ga Jets all weekend to test and trim. Hopefully. If I can't get them dialed in and me used to them by next weekend, Ocala is a bust for me flying-wise. I'm going regardless, no matter how bad I suck. I love that contest.

My are both IC. The ones in the above pics, the red/blue/white/yellow ones are both electric. using a Plett xtra 30-10, and the big Tanic Packs (3 lbs!!!) and I'm still waiting on a flying weight. but with everything installed except 3 servos and the radio, it weighed 9 lbs 6 ozs WITH the 3 lb batteries in it. It still has some minor stuff to do to it, but I know for a fact it should be well under 11 lbs.....

    Hi Troyhm.

    I think you meant F4?

I think there's been a bug in Mike's pen on this one... looks like main line is ok, but outline is a bit out of centre.
(I think we are making symmetrical fuse here)

see attached shot, (I know how difficult to you is to read norhern hemispfere pictures, therefore enjoy )

    Troy,

Looks like that is F5 -

mine is 126.5 mm not 138.55 - (this is adjusted to fit the taper of the two sets of turtle deck cores I have.)

I've been in a state of total flux regarding my former widths, there is where I am at, at the moment..... : )

I've just updated my templates (again), on my website download a new copy...
