RE: Typhoon
Here's my wing press, a modified Sigk design and K Hoard fuse jig. Contest balsa should be here Friday so I can put these 2 new fangled building contraptions to work. I want to do a little experimenting with them before I start my 120 Boxer and then the T2k this fall. Hope the pics come out

Slightly off topic pictures.
I am building a couple of Hydeouts for a friend to finance my wood plane. The pics are of bonding balsa skins to stabs. I use a vacuum pump. Works well, but it can be a pain when the bags don't seal well.
That tube thingie is a hole saw I made for punching the wing tube hole. It's bolted to a jig I built last week. I plan to use it for aligning the wings too.

RE: Typhoon
Nice pictures guys, tph1 this is a interesting press you have there.
This must be really strong profiles you have if you only need two of them. Just be careful because if they bend while you are tightening, you will get much more pressure on the wingtip and the root. Then there is a danger the wingskin will not be properly glued in the middle of the wing. It might be useful here to have a third clamp for the middle just in case. Also in my experience a press like that needs to be fastened to something solid otherwise the lower half can lift from the table.
I have not used a vacuum pump like dreadnaut but it seems to be the best way to go.

RE: Typhoon
You may be right Sigk I may add another piece of unistrut perpendicular to the other 2 to keep out any flexing. The boards are 3/4" MDF so the are plenty strong, it's all I can do to pick it up.

RE: Typhoon
After the tip had been glued on to the stab and sanded to shape, the elevators were cut free from the stab.
The same process will be used for the wing.

RE: Typhoon
The rest of the bottom was finished with scrap balsa.
The next thing to do would be to open up the pipe tunnel, but I kind of liked how the three foam pieces lined up so I'm going to enjoy it a little longer.

RE: Typhoon
SigK, Looks very neat and well thought out. I took your advise and added another brace to my wing press, it is much less likely to bow in the middle now.

RE: Typhoon
Thanks tph1 and good luck with your press
It is a good idea to get a good fit between top and fin before gluing on to the fuselage, much easier.

RE: Typhoon
This was terribly embarrassing,[sm=rolleyes.gif] when the time came to align the fin I found out that I didn't even have the right size tool for it so my trusty old X-acto tray came to the rescue. Luckily it turned out alright.
Hmmm I definitely need to go to the hardware store if I build another 2 meter plane

RE: Typhoon
Sigk, After building and sheeting my stabs on my press, I'm going to change it to the arrangement you have with the metal bracing running across the board instead of lengthwise like I have them now, I noticed this morning when I took them out that the ends had slightly bowed, if I had had wings in there the would be warped now, so I learned a lesson the easy way this time instead of the hard way I usually learn them, I did the urethane glue method for the first time also and it worked great.

RE: Typhoon
tph1, luckily even if we do make mistake constructing foam wings, it isn't near as much damage compared to build up wings. And the real fun with foam wings is that it is affordable to do some experiments. Especially if you use veneer as a substitute to balsa, some have even been successful with brown paper

RE: Typhoon
Now the top is being glued on to the fuselage.
The foam offcuts makes for a nice stand and help protecting the fuselage. They will be used later as a stand during transport, just need to be strengthened.

RE: Typhoon
The canopy frame is next.
Putting wax paper between the fuselage and frame should make it easy to separate the frame later. I am very impressed with this design and how well it goes together and this is without doubt the best plan I have built from, the formers are very accurate and that makes this project so much more enjoyable. No wasting time here trying to make things fit.

RE: Typhoon
Looking good Sig [8D]
My Tempest is in the final stages of paint, the wings and stabs are covered. All that's left is 2 more trim colors of paint, then a healthy dose of clear coat for polishing.
Be warned, this bird is PRETTY!!!!!!
Yes I'm blowing my own horn a bit, but I am fairly proud of the way this thing is turning out; it's my best work to date.
Now if it flies.......
