Angus,

It looks like you had to fly over a fence at the end of the runway for an approach to land from right to left? What's at the other end, another fence?

Yeap... thats flying in the UK.
Any old scrap of land 'll do! It's all you'll normally get as the local residents and County Councils tend to be seriously anal with regards to RC flying.
None of those fantastic prepared sites you have in the US.... never mind talking about the weather.
Still it looks better there than it does here. We still don't have a single leaf on any of the tree's... and it's the 2nd of May!!!

Actually this site is a lot better than it looks on the pics. Digital compacts foreshorten the view considerably making the fence look closer than it is although you have to be careful! It is my home club and is on the site of a disused racecourse which the local council keep for recreational use. There is horse grazing adjacent and for this reason our site is fenced off and also cut and maintained by the council. We have a portacabin on site and no vandalism. All in all this is one of the better UK sites and is miles ahead of the usual ragged patch in the middle of a bog.

Indeed Adrian, but as Malcolm said it's a lot closer than it looks. Was no issue at all + it is a really good site

UK sites can be a problem, some good and some not so good. We have to contend with the low level power line on a right to left approach and then it's a case of missing the mole hills for touch down. If you overshoot on a dead stick approach then you are in a field full of prize bulls. However, it does make you concentrate on that final approach. Anybody got a solution for moles? By the way, well done Angus on Sunday at Cottesmore, a good day had by all. I hope you enjoyed you tasty Burger King meal on the way home.

Here in IOWA ( corn country) Moles If you can treat the ground to kill the grubs they eat: they will move. If you cannot do that a small wind mill will put vibration inot the ground and the will move away.

Good luck Mark

To bring this thread slightly back to pattern flying, Lanark racecourse was the site of one of the very first airshows in the UK and probably anywhere in the world. In August 1910 the top flyers of the day gathered to fly the Edwardian equivalent of P07

The local paper, still in existence today celebrated the event with a long poem which began -

''On towards the Lanark Race Course, where of old the lapwing screamed,
There to see the daring air-men, of whom our fathers never dreamed.''

So here is a pic. make up your mind is it from 1910 or Angus flying P07 the other day?

Is that Angus' new plane? That big wing's going to make it tough for him to snap.

What's in a chicken royale?
Processed meat and horses hooves

Yes that is my latest plane and that's me in the picture with my summer leathers on. Note the -0.01 degree anhedral tail plane. Rolling manoeuvres have been completely transformed by this modification.

Yeah, good alternative to those anhedral tails.
Just put it UNDER the fuselage. Smart, Angus. [8D]

But what about knife edges, Angus? With the wing and stabs that far apart, I bet it requires major mixing

Hi Steve, long time no see! Interested in trying the F3A again?

My version is X-Treme Composite, available from Emerald Hobby (Niall O'Sullivan/Brian Carolan). I think it's fair to say you get the most for your money with this version as it comes with almost all of the hardware, although I did change the Budd mount for a Hyde type (quieter/less vibration). From X-Treme you can either get -5 degree tail or flat, mine is -5 and this is the one Naruke recommends.

There is also the Oxai version, very high quality, but no hardware as standard ( I think). Its got a -6 degree tail and costs a bit more than X-Treme. Only real difference is solid canopy, touch more anhedral, slightly better paint job (although X-Treme is more than good enough).

Lastly is the Naruke Hobby version which comes in at around £2700 + shipping. Available with flat tail, -5, -8. Again, no hardware as far as I know but quality is out of this world. If money is no object then this is the one to go for I'd say. However, I believe they all come out around the same weight (4.5-4.6kg) and they all have roughly the same tail arrangement so really it's just down to personal manufacturer preference.

If I were to do it all again I would still choose the X-Treme Version. For me, the model looks much better with the clear canopy and pilot, accessories are very high quality, assembles quickly and easily (took me 12 very leisurely afternoons), its light and flys straight as an arrow.

However, if you aren't in a rush for a plane I would wait 6 months or so for the new Naruke design to come out which I believe X-Treme will be kitting. Don't know anything about it but if the Astral XX is anything to go by it will be superb

Hope all is well,

Angus

The Oregon Scientific temperature gizmo on my Scottish office wall is currently reading 25.5 C (77.9 F) Internal and 28.9 C (84 F) external. I came to work this morning without a coat!

I guess today IS the Scottish summer!
