Propeller for YS 160 DZ
Has anyone experimented with an 18x8w or 18x10 APC on a YS 160dz for pattern? I have a new Genesis and I'm curious to see how that would work with it. I have a 17x12 APC currently and just wondering how the forementioned props would compare. Thanks

RE: Propeller for YS 160 DZ
I used a 18x8w on a 140dz, and it was just right. I saw about 8300 rpm if I remember correct. Tractor verticals and very slow downlines. I tried a 19x8w on the 140, but it was way too much load. 30% cool power for both experiments. The 18x8w was actually pretty fun and useful for pattern, but in the end I preferred the 16.5x12w for the 140. I would guess the 18x10 would work with the 160, but the 19x8w might still be a bit much.

Hello
APC 18x10 on 160 DZ and Genesis is good but trajectory is not very good (my friend tested it)
I used APC 17x12 (25% nitro) on 160 DZ on Rhapsody (4700 g) and it's very good.
CPLR and BPLR used APC 17x12 on their Oxalys .
You 'll choose a propeller according to ratio of nitro of your fuel and kind of plane in particular the weight.

I am flying a 15x11 4B or a 15.5x12 4 Blades APC props on my 1.60DZ... You will love this setup I guarantee. They run quiet and you still have tremendous and I mean TREMENDOUS power to spare. Throttle response is smooth and the braking really helps to maintain constant speed. I have this setup on my Genesis and I absolutely love it... Earl Haury and Glen Watson were flying this setup last season in FAI on their DZ's. After seeing them fly and several discussions with them I decided to go with a 4 blade setup and I will never go back to 2 blades on a DZ driven pattern plane. I have had a whole bunch of different guys from Advanced to FAI fly my plane to try it out and they all really were excited about the way it handles.
Im running Cool Power 30% heli.. Again, its also a really quiet setup.. The 18" 2 blades are practically ripping the prop and are probably exceeding the decibel limit.. Either 4 blade is so quiet that you can barely hear it at the box ends.

Hello Mike
Thanks for all.
I 'll test 4 B propellers on my plane160 DZ. But with 25 % nitro which 4 B propeller is the best, APC 15x11 or 15,5x 12 on my 160DZ ?
Regards

15x11 is my favorite but they are a little scarce.. I have 2 of them left so Im trying really hard to be careful with them. I have spoken with APC a couple of times about continuing the size due to growing popularity and they are sort of iffy on it.. More interest may sway their decision. Both props perform well and very similarly. I think QQ was really liking the 15.5x12 4B from some articles that I read.
The sweet spot for the 4 blades is 8600 RPM's. This is what Earl suggested to me when I started and he was dead on the money... It is an AWESOME combination.

I just got a Mejzlik 16x11 carbon fiber 3 blade prop for my 1.40 DZ powered OTOP .
I haven't had a chance to try it yet but it should be good. I've running a 16x12W
2 blade on it now and looking at the tachometer it could pull a larger prop. I'll post
the results after I fly it. The Mejzliks are a little pricey but they seem quieter than the
APC props and sure pull good.

My experience is the the 160DZ likes the 15.5 x 12 and the 140DZ likes the 15x11. Mike East is right the 15 x 11 is discontinued. I hope they do indeed start making it again.
I'll be testing a Biela CF 3 bladed 16x 10 soon. It's the prettiest prop I have ever seen. Mike

RE: Propeller for YS 160 DZ
I tried running the 15.5 x 12 4 blade prop on the weekend. All I could get was 7800 RPM on the ground so I gave up. I do use 30% nitro. I know my engine is good because it turns a 16.5 x 12W at over 8500RPM on the ground.
What are you guys doing to get this prop to work on a DZ160?

I get in the 8300-8400 range on cool power 30% heli.. Im not sure what the problemo is. I talked to Earl about it again this weekend and he said that you can try reducing the pitch of the 15.5x12 prop. I wouldnt try it but I suppose if you have some skill in that area it wouldnt be too hard... I think there is a pretty good push to get the 15x11 back.

RE: Propeller for YS 160 DZ
Theres seems to be a lot of exotic multiblade props being suggested and recommended here.
How come, everytime I see pictures of the proffessional bid named F3A flyers, say at the WC for example, they all seem to be using 2 blade props.
Good to see there's some hobbly pattern pilots that know something they don't.
Stick it to them boys!

Respectfully, you see pictures of them flying. I actually see them flying and discuss in person with several of them what they think is the best combination. I'm nobody, but in the pattern world, the guy that turned me onto the the 4 blade prop is probably one of, if not the most knowledgeable about YS engines and well known pattern guys out there. Trust me, a good percentage of those that are flying the 1.60DZ are using a 4 blade prop and for good reasons. Some are using an 18" prop but its pretty loud, you arguably get better performance with the 4 blade. For what its worth Quique is using the 4 blade, thats someone you probably recognize not to mention several others. One thing though, there are SO many top flyers that are flocking to electric, the actual number of guys flying FAI with glow engines at all is getting very limited.
Its not an experimental thing, it works and works extremly well.

RE: Propeller for YS 160 DZ
Here is a recent picture of the current World Champ sporting a 2 blader.
You'll notice that his eye's seem permanently closed.
Obviously this must be the reason why he's missed the muli blade miracle?

Hello
I discussed on saturday in contest sélection Team France with CPLR (WC 2005) and his brother BPLR (5th WC 2005) about engine and propellers. They told me they prefered 2 blades APC 17x12 on their engine Yamada 160 DZ or 170 DZ (fuel 30 % nitro). I saw their flights, awesome, very powerfull, no vertical limit, very soft sound.
PS : CPLR and Stéphane Carrier (13th WC 2005 is in my club) are sponsorized by Yamada. They test every modifications and new engines send by Yamada with differents propellers and valid the engines before selling by Yamada.
But everybody does what he wants et does his own experience !

Hello
I 'm going to phone BPLR to answer your question, because I don't look at this TE wing in detail.
Thickness is 8 mm in the middle of wing but I don't know on edge ?

Yah, Im sure there are top flyers that prefer 2 blades, There are also many who prefer 4. I prefer 4. There is a FANTASTIC alternative in a 4 blade. The prop you use isnt what wins championships anyway. Those guys could win with a pizza box and an OS .46,
Not that it matters, but the guy that recommended the 4 blade prop was the US World team captain and again one of the foremost authorities on YS engines there is. If you dont trust my word, you can take his to the bank. Im just telling you it works really really well. Maybe CPLR should have a listen, Im sure he wants to use whatever works best. Im sure he, unlike you is pretty open to discussion.
Sounds like you are either arrogant, in a bad mood or just trying to pick a fight.. Get over it, they are just propellers. There are tons of choices, thats why they come in every size/pitch combo imaginable.

RE: Propeller for YS 160 DZ
Christophe has already tried 4 bladed props. Seems he prefers the 2B.
I tried a 4B prop on the Synergy last summer before the worlds. Was good, but didn't have the pull of my normal prop and certainly wasn't any quieter to the ear, perhaps the noise meter, never checked. I only used it for a couple of flights then went back to my trusty Engel. Like everything else it all down to personal preference.
A
ps FYI all of the top 10 pilots at the recent worlds used 2B props. Not one 3B or 4B
