My brother has had 2 of them, one with an inverted engine and one mounted right side up, both using an OS 46. The inverted one looks better but is more of a hassle to start naturally but it runs fine with no issues

I would always mount it in a 7 0r 8 o'clock position. This means easy starting, easy mounting of the starter clip. Also, for mounting, it is nicer (IMHO!), because the exhaust will then be mounted centrally

thanks guys i think my bearing are shot but will consider the 46 ax again as my next purchase. so if im going to mount it at 7 or 8 o'clock position do i need to cut the cowl to make room for the head and same thing for the sideways mounted?

here some pictures of an old Giles, with the engine at 8 o'clock. Point is the exhaust in then pointing downward. Hope this clarifies:

Thanks Wagen,

i got the picture, just wondering if the hole on the cowl for the engines head would still keep the looks of the venus. i've seen a venus 40 with inverted engine and it looks clean but worried about the problems associated with inverted engine

I have been flying my Venus for two weekends.

I was hesitating between inverted and oblique for the very same reason, but I finally decided to put it inverted since in the oblique position I coudln't use the Tower muffler with a TT 46. The original one barely fitted.

In the inverted position what I do is to avoid feeding the engine by manually covering the carb, and just apply the starter as long as needed for the first time. After that I usually start it manually.

Juan.

Some pictures of an engine mounted that way can be seen here:

http://perso.orange.fr/stephane.carrier/majestic.htm

Helps to get the exhaust away from the plane, especially when putting a silicone exhaust deflector on the muffler exit,
also avoids the bulky muffler to stick all the way out of the cowling, as when mounted inverted.

In the example it can be seen why the standard muffler is ok but not a longer one with a fixed atachment like the Tower.
