Default New Defiant under construction

This is the first composite fuselage under construction. just about read to start the finish process. Happy about the weight, should end up 10.25 to 10.5 finished. Hopefully it will be done by early March.

The front is Carbon fiber over kevlar, which makes it kind of green in color. The fuse on this one came out 28oz. including canopy and chin. todd

Default Where can I get one?

Todd,

Is that the same wing as last years. The tips look a little more pointy. Maybe it's just the picture.

Do you think you can have me one built by April?

Your loving brother,

Clay

Makle sure you have her trimmed and ready for me in time for Pawnee Rock,,,,, I'll enter and use your airplane.

You never know,,maybe the passion will return.

Now that is a really different looking airplane. Is it (or will it be) a production kit and if so, who sells them? Any web sites that have information on this plane? TIA...

snsmith, The Defiant is not a producion kit and is just something I came up with on the drafting table. I don't want to try and make a living doing kits (tough way to make a living) but possibly would kit some in the future if anyone is interested. The prototype is on page one of "lets see your pattern planes" thread.

Thanks, Todd Schmidt

Thanks for the feedback, I didn't realize (but should have guessed) it's a homegrown plane. It's a beauty...I haven't seen anything quite like it before.

I got to see this plane fly and meet Todd at the Omaha contest this season. The plane looks and flys great. And Todd is one heck of a good craftsman. He really put some work in that plane. Plenty of compound curves and lines.

When I spoke to him at the contest, he mentioned he may test a Smaragd type wing just to see the difference.

Hey Guys,

The Defiant on this thread met all my expectations and helped me do a lot better at contests in 2003. The finished airplane is pictured on the thread "Post your patternship pictures". I believe it is on page 3.

I just sprayed the clear on a second fuselage yesterday and will post a picture of it with the wings. .

Bob, thanks for your kind words regarding my bird. It was good meeting you at Omaha. I was totally blown away with your excellent flying. Hope to see you there next year.

Todd

Here's what I have done so far on #2. Still need to cover the rudder and stick the graphics on.
As you can see the wings are quite a bit different than the first! I'll try and post another picture after its completed!

Rune, Yes, once I'm satisfied with the quality of my layups I plan to sell a few kits if anyone is interested. I want to be able to provide a nice pretty white fuselage as many of the new kits do. I think I've found the product that will allow me to do this. Also I want to test the new wing compared to the origional. The origional has so much taper the cores had to be cut in two pieces which worked out fine. Even a CNC couldn't cut them in one piece to my satisfaction. The new wing has less taper in the trailing edge and was easy to cut in one piece.

Thanks for your interest and comments

Todd!

Looks like an FAI pylon plane (cheeks, canopy, wing tips)! It's beautiful. What size engine does it use? It looks fast...how its it on downlines compared to a widebody type plane? It dosen't look like it has enough drag.

The Defiant is pretty darn wide 2 meter plane.

Todd,
Can you post a top front picture?

Hey Todd, #2 looks good. Did you make the alternate wings interchangeable w/ #1 fuse?

Did you ever decide whether to try a contest in Ft. Scott?

Adrian, The nose of the plane is 7.5" wide and provides enough drag to make it a constant speed plane through the downlines. The first Defiant came out at 10 pounds 6oz and is powered by a YS140L, and the new one will have a 140DZ for power and is looking to come out about the same or a little lighter than the first. Your absulutley right about the F1 look as it is based off a F1 named Snowshoe(highest evolution of the old Shoestring).

Rune, The fuse is carbon and kevlar with a foam inlay like many of the new composite ships are. It makes a nice stiff, light fuse compared to regular glass layups, but it does come with added expense but IMO worth every penney.

Brian, How are your doing buddy?? Have you posted a picture of your new beauty? Seen some pics Chris took, looks great and I hear fly's great too. We are having a Pattern contest at Fort Scott in 04. The club scheduled it for the first weekend in October. Hope that's not to late!! But the only time we could fit it in around all the other contests..

Bob, Here's a few nose shots as requested!!
