Joe,

I'm going to Li-po's; dual TP 730's going to a Tech Aero regulator, for redundancy. I have been running Fromeco 2600 Relions, which are Li-ion packs with great success, but I want to try something new. I'm pretty sure that the Li-po's have a little higher 'C' rating than do the Li-ions, meaning that they have a little more punch. Both have been used sucessfully, so pick whichever you feel more comfortable with. If you go Li=po, you may want to charge outside your airplane, in case there are issues with charging, however I haven't seen any issues with the smaller batteries, and with the chargers today, you have to be really trying to burn something up to get the pack to go.

Here's a Wikipedia article detailing the differences.

Doesn't seem to be a huge difference; maybe the Li-ion is a safer bet for a first lithium battery? I think with a 1.20 plane and the (lower end digital) servos I have, I shouldn't need much more than a 5amp (2-3C) draw. The Li-ion is smaller, lighter, and has more capacity.

Props to Tech-Aero.net for regulators; I will be using them as well

Thanks Ryan!

Ryan,
I have exactly that same setup in my Black Magic V2.2: 2 Tech-Aero regulators with 2 TP 730 LiPO's. No problems in a full season of flying. The reason this works so well is because you can adjust the output voltage of the regulators within a fine degree. Our normal configuration gives you about 30 millivolts of resolution. When you start flying with the dual regulator setup, use a charger that shows you how much energy went back into the batteries. You may find that one battery always requires slightly more - obviously this one has been delivering more energy to your system. To balance things out, adjust the voltage on this regulator one step lower and fly some more. Eventually you'll find that both batteries require nearly the same amount of energy when re-charging. That's your goal. Even if you don't do this you have the added security of an "extra" battery and regulator - if either one fails you can still fly!

The NHP batteries from Central work well. Also get the charger that goes with them. Just make sure you charge them adequately before you fly (long story)....

I'm assuming the charger I've got should be fine - charges and balances lipos...

But thanks, the batteries are on my list.

The NHP charger is cheap and works really well with those packs. I prefer to use it with those packs.

I just balanced two APC props last night; each one required an entire blade (back side) to be covered in clear nail polish, dry, and then more applied to the tips - they were both pretty far out of balance.

What do you guys think of Zinger wooden props? Blades are a little narrower than APC, but the prop is much lighter and the ones I have require very little to balance. They're also progressively pitched, from 6" to 10" (which a chart says is equivalent to an 8" pitch)

Zingers. Inefficient design. Will break on prop strike.

Stay with APC...they are definitely some of the most efficient props out there. The Zingers are older props and definitely not useful for todays pattern applications,

I lost a plane due to a new NMP li-ion 2 years ago. Charged fully the night before with the NMP charger, checked under load before I flew, first flight of the day. Took off fine and then it was gone. 1 cell checked in at 0, the other was fine. Not sure why it went bad. It had about 10 flights on it. Lipo's, never had a problem so far. Well, except for when I flew 8 1/2 flights on a 730.. If I had only stopped at 8.. lol

How does one repair wing tube sleeves that are installed in a wing? The ones on my plane seem to crack/split really easily.

Will hard-mounting a YS 110 to my Yak really shorten the life of my servos? Is a soft mount a 'must have' for YS engines?
