Hi Ahmet I had aileron deflection set at 22 degrees with 100% servo ATV 60 degree rotation. I never checked deflections beyond 100% ATV/60 degree rotation. With only 22 degree deflection, that is pretty good mechanical advantage/ force multiplication.
I think Bryan and you correct. The drive train on these 9650 is weak and has slop enough to let some vibration turn into flutter. Very easy to happen around center (I was straight and level, no aileron input when it happened). The forces of a resonant flutter can build very quickly and strip out those small nylon gear.
Live and learn I had heavier duty servos sitting on the bench but was trying to make 5kg. I was planning to order the bls551s after seeing Byron's recommendations on his website the week before. But the 9650s were installed and I was hot to try out the new bird.

A mate down here was using S9650 servos in his electric Cyclone for a number of years. He had them on the ailerons and only one on the elevators using DEPS. He has since switched to the BLS 651. He says the BLS servos have next to zero slop and 7Kg of torque.
It's surprising what you can get away with on an electric. Forget it for glow as the vibration will kill it.... Having said that, I have seen people using the JR equivalent of the S9650 on a YS 1.70 powered model... May have had metal gears though... Not sure I would risk that with a YS.
What did your E-Valiant weight come in at and with what batteries?

Hi Patricio,
That's a pretty good weight with the Rhinos. Rhinos are typically a good 100 grams heavier than TP or F3A Unlimited 10S packs.

As some of you know I am now flying an Envision. I have my Valiant, ready to fly, and I will still be around to answer whatever questions you have about it. Granted, you have a much better person to ask... the designer Bryan Hebert, but if there is anything that I can help with, let me know. I wish I had flown the Valiant at the last Worlds as now I have a perfectly good airplane sitting on my shelf. Once I figured out (was told) that I went backwards on the CG, and Bryan told me were to balance it at, snaps became predictable, spins and stall turns were cake and anything rolling felt much more locked on. But the Envision is my first design and is flying good as well, so I will be flying it this season.
I have been keeping track of the thread and as far as aileron servos, I personally think that 9650's are too small for the ailerons on any 2M pattern plane, even on electric. Back in 03 at the Poland Worlds, we (our electric team) put together 2 Rhapsody's. One had 9650's on the ailerons, the other 9151's (9551/BL551's weren't around then). The one with the 9151's hands down snapped much better than the one with 9650's. And the ailerons on the Rhapsody weren't as big as the Valiant ailerons. Sorry to see what happened Steve. I'm in love with the BLS551's as the aileron servo of choice (I didn't have any BLS551's when my Valiant was put together).
What did the pushrod set-up look like (from a top view like the pic)? Maybe there was some weird angle that didn't help things either.

Valiant...pretty fine flying model!
One of my fellow club members let me fly the 6th flight on his Plettenberg/Thunder Power PL-II powered Valiant this evening...just as Brett Wickizer said in his flight review posted on Bryan Hebert's website...it is a very fine flying airplane. I have been flying a Hacker C5013XL powered Integral the last year and have been very pleased. The 5 minute flight flew through most of P-11 and liked the snaps, rolls and "feel" of the model very much.

Can you tell me which motor you used in your Valiant? and prop?

I made a design change to the nose and got 2 different protos for testing and I would like to make one more change but I think the manufacturer is busy with other projects

I am now in the process of building up a Valiant (JS scheme) and sofar am extremely happy with the build! No issues at all.
It will be electric and I am awaiting news from Plettenberg to decide if I go for the Advanced 30-10. The only problem sofar is I guess that I am building faster then release of this motor. Hopefully we will hear something soon.

Does anyone have the spinner size of the Valiant? It was mentioned in one of these threads that the diameter was 3 1/4" but CARF are telling me it is 3 1/2"?

well, my fellow Valiant owners, I am almost at the end of the build. All I wait for now is motor and controller to complete the plane.
I have one question: in the bag of small parts is one carbon rod (6 inch long, 1/4'' OD) and four short pieces of carbon tube (1 inch long, 1/4'' ID, 5/16'' OD). In the booklet I don't see where you should use them, either in the thread here. Any clue what it is supposed to do?
