Default Addiction wood buildJapan

I know this isn't new but I thought it worth another visit as we swing into building season. I'm just amazed at the craftsmanship this builder exhibits...this plane is just bad-azzz..all while doing that work inside a shoebox sized room! I had to chuckle when he's applying resin to the glass while indoors...he's wearing a mask but I'm sure the neighbors weren't too thrilled with the smell! And to top it off, his finish job is simply amazing AND it was painted outdoors (and Japan is pretty darn humid most of the year) on his patio and out the back of his minivan! The guy's gotta have $3k in paint and guns alone...
Simply amazing job!!!

Use google's translation website and get a chuckle out of how it formats sentences :-)

I frequently go back to that website, as well as the build thread that Mark Novack did on the Enigma several years ago here on RCU. Amazing build log, and the Japanese airplanes are works of art. I can't believe how well they are thought out.

That is some incredible workmanship, puts my building to utter shame. that is true Addiction to the hobby .

Would love to build a plane like that eventually but I don't think I have the patience just yet, maybe in 10 years or so.

Yeap, that was just plane SICK!Thank goodness he included a few shots of the young girls to prove he wasn't completely wacko. What I don't understand is, after so much work and attention to detail...he went for that engine mount straight from the stone age.

Back in the day when everyone built, skills were honed and developed to a very high degree. Young hobbists/pilots morphed into craftsman and applied skills learned in the hobby to other things in life. The UKIE Stunt flyers( was one of them in the 60s) continue to exhibit works of art to this day.
The builder of the model rule sure brings out the best of us . Not looking to start a debate on that topic, for sure.

If you think the Japanese airplanes look good in pictures you should see one
live, in person. You absolutely cannot believe they started out as a stack of
balsa wood. These guys take craftsmanship to a level that is unbelievable.

I've seen them and I agree!! There are some terrific builders here, too. The quality of ARFs has virtually eliminated the need to build, but there are still a few builders out there (hopefully not a dying breed )

I would put the stuff Bryan Hebert, Mike Hester, Mark Atwood, and several others out there in the same class as the Japanese builders.

No doubt they are quality builders! I know it takes a LOT of time to do but it would be cool if the next time one of them build a plane "to the nines" they took a jillion more photos of every stage, focusing more on the prep and finishing steps. I know that the vast majority of us aspire to improved craftsmanship and really benefit from viewing all the different methods of building and finishing...

Thanks to everyone who takes time to share their techniques with us!!!

I think part of the problem is that with the amount of time that it takes to do that, just adds to the already lengthy build time. I know Bryan and Mike both kind of step back in the finishing process and add as they go along. They start with an idea and it constantly changes. I know all of them will say that 99% of a great finish is the prep work. They are so anal on the sanding process leading up to the actual painting and that is what gives the immaculate finishes.

The very first time I saw a Japanese model up close, it was around 1982 or 83. The World's team went through my club field in Texas to practice before going to Pensacola for the Worlds. The models inspired me to become a better builder/ designer.

You know what? the Japanese modelers were more interested in Ed Galle's fiberglass and foam Arrow. They swarmed around the Arrow like ants around a sugar cube. Ed Galle was a master and his models generally sported all kinds of gadgets such as operating doors for retracts, spoilers, extremely tight fitting cowlings with almost imperceptible seams, etc. He was way ahead of his time and I was very lucky to be mentored by him.

Finishing a model to extremes is time and elbow grease. Ask Bryan....his finishes are extraordinary. Raiko Potter's also. Excellent eyesight is a must.

Addiction GP by Starcraft was designed for YS 160 DZ. Unfortunately that plane is no longer available. My Addiction is no longer with us. It got 328 flights old over a period of 5 month. The wing broke during a snap from knife edge to knife edge.

Now I’m building an Aries 07 form Naruke Hobby. It’s the same construction as the Addiction. I’m converting the Aries 07 to plug in wings and a detachable hatch at the top. Its more practical for electric power. My Aries will have a Plettenberg instead of the YS 170.

Hi Henning

I'm interested to buy the wooden kit of Asyuler or Altair sold by Naruké Hobby.
How to get a kit ?
I thought Naruké Hobby should deliver only in Japan !

as small of a room as the addiction was built in they should have installed a buildcam so we could follow along.
