Phoenix 2010 Contest Update
The 2010 contest season got underway today in D7 with 27 (unofficial) pilots showing up to fly in the desert sunshine. I'm sure the weather forecast prvented more from attending. Well, the weather gods had other ideas as rain moved in hard from the west about 9:30am and basically washed the days flying down the drain. We did manage to get in 4 flights early before the west coast weather system moved in to ruin the day. We had a good showing of pilots from Cal, Az, Utah,NM and I even saw a vehicle from Kansas. Rainday entertainment was provided by Rusty Fried and Mark Leesburg flying a foamy and a golf demo of Mark Leesburg teeing it up and driving golf balls somewhere into the desert. We'll try again tomorrow morning with wheels up at 7:45 (geez that's early) according to Rusty Fried, the CD only scattered showers predicted. Attached are a few pics of the morning activity as pilots assembled.

Hey D7 guys,
I was in the AF with a MSGT Burman that flew pattern in the late 70's in the Phoenix area. WAFB AZ. I am now flying pattern in D4 with my son.

Glen,
The Symphony is mine. Flys great. YS160, Airtronics 10ch 2.4. Being a D6 transplant I have flown at the old Frisco field at a several contests in the past.

RE: Phoenix 2010 Contest Update
I'm at a soaring contest in the far southeast Valley in Queen Creek. We got hit hard Saturday morning at about 10 or so. Rained hard for about an hour. Then it slowed and finally stopped. We lost about 2 hours total including restringing the winches and turning them into the now prevailing south winds.
Got a few showers after sunset. Tomorrow looks to be a better day.
Good luck to you guys at SVF. Two contests I wanted to attend, on the same weekend, in the same area (Phoenix).

RE: Phoenix 2010 Contest Update
Jon Carter and myself made the trip almost halfway and stayed at Jerry Budd's house on Thursday night (thanks as always Jerry) only to decide at 4:45 am on Friday that the weather wasn't worth the extra drive. It's 11 hours home from Phx for us so we didn't feel up to it. Glad to hear that a few rounds were flown. Here's the results I got from Rusty earlier.

RE: Phoenix 2010 Contest Update
Hey Chris,
Too bad you guys didn't come down. All in all we had a really fun time. I got to the field Friday morning and flew all day, I think I put in about 10 flights! Saturday was a rain out in the morning and the contest was called but several of us stuck around and the afternoon cleared enough so we flew. It spit rain a bit on Saturday afternoon so running the contest might have been tough to run but we got in a lot of practice time. Mark Leseberg was doing some serious practice flying on Saturday afternoon and we all provided some critique for him. It was a good time even though we didn't fly any scored rounds.
Sunday was a pretty good day. We got in three scored rounds. The weather was really great for round one and not too bad for round two and three (a bit of a stiff cross wind on round three however).
See you guys at a future event
Steve

RE: Phoenix 2010 Contest Update
Hey guys,
Any important changes you make to Phoenix to get it ready for F3A practice/contest? I just got mine - I struggle with sometimes the way the camera angle changes, always when I'm inverted using the rudder, and it all changes around so the plane ends up pointing at me. I'm sure some of it is me, but I know I don't fly THAT bad!
Anything else I should know about or try? I want to do the online contests this winter.
Thanks!
