YS170DZ Eatiing Glow Plugs
I'm running a new YS 170 (non CDI) and I've gone through 3 OS-F plugs. I had to change the first plug after my goround break in (18.1X10) prop before I could get a flight without deadstick. After the 2nd plug I got 25 flights on the 18.1X 10 prop then changed to the 18.1X11. I had to retune (lean) and change the plug before the plane would run again with the 18.1X11 without a dead stick. Finally I got 13 flights on the 18.1X11 prop before breaking the tip (about 1/2inch on each blade) on a landing. I dressed up the prop and got 6 more great flights without retuning the motor on what was likely a 17X11prop. Now I have to change the plug again. Is it normal to go thru this many plugs in the first 50 flights?

That isn't normal at all. Have you tried changing to the YS plug at all? Perhaps you got a batch of bad OS-F plugs. What fuel are you using?
BTW, I can't remember the last time I had to change a plug because it was bad on my YS motors... I've changed them because they've carboned up or I've changed them because I couldn't remember the last time I had changed them. [X(]

My YS plug usually last for at least 70 flights with Coolpower 30% heli, slightly on the rich side.
After you removed the plug, did you take a look at the condition of the plug's filament? May be you were running too lean, what was the rpm? How many tanks did you run the engine on the ground before flying?

Definitely running lean as Gary said. Adjust the high needle valve to peak and open until it drops 200-300RPM, I used to change my glow plug after about 100 to 150 flights just in case.

I have always used Coolpower 30% Heli. I ran five 20oz tanks on the ground. (3 tanks fast idle only and 2 tanks brifly going to full throttle followed by 1 minute or so at idle, HS was over 2.5 turns out) The 18.1X10 would run @ 8200 rpm max. HS needdle 1.5 turns out. If I go richer RPM drops to 8K. When I switched to the 18.1X11 I had to lean the engine to 1.25 turns and got 7700 RPM. I'm got 7500 - 7400 RPM with the 18.1X11 and the HS at 1.5 turns. I'm got 7400 RPM with the HS at 1.75 turns. I'll order some YS plugs and see if they work any better.

Actually, 7,400 to 7,500 is more than enough to pull through the P sequence, that's what I'm getting with the 18.5x12 wpn. If you don't think you have enough power, you can always adjust your throttle curve, or physically advance the throttle push rod slightly forward to open the butterfly a bit earlier.
However, I will suggest using a lesser prop and stay with about 7,800 to 7,900 for the next ten flights to further break-in the engine, before switching to a bigger prop.

Hey Glen
A little off subject but I am flying one of Ron Barrs old Smaragd Z's while I build the Valiant. The plane weighs right at 11 lbs and the 19x11 is by far the better prop. I am seldom over 1/3 power and very constant speed. This prop is much better in the down lines. I am running slightly rich at one turn out on needle valve. idle is 1/8 turn in from flush and is pretty rich. This engine really is awsome for power & torque. I am using the CDI but I understand the power is about the same on the non CDI version.
