They are called canalyzers. The theory is that they clean up the airflow as it heads back to the tail.

so do they work? can you see/tell the difference with and without? So does it now qualify as a bipe? Thanks for the pics and info

It is the legend not the theory. So called canalyzers acts like little upper wing of biplane - forms an area of higher pressure between them and the wings. Yes you can call this area a canal where air is restricted by canard and wing to flow off the fuse. Because of that a model have higher lift while flying on knife edge and better responds to rudder while flying normal.
