Cajun nats 2013 Straw poll, 3 day contest

Just out of curosity we would like to get some feed back on who would attend from D6 and D3 if we ran a 3 day contest. The thought is to start competiotion flying on Friday, and get 2 rounds in for Advanced, Masters, FAI, and 3 rounds in for Sportsman and Intermediate. Saturday get 2 rounds for Sportsman, Intermediate, and 3 rounds in for Advanced, Masters, and FAI. Then on Sunday get in one round for all classes, thus making it a 6 round contest for all classes and finishing up early on Sunday to allow for those traveling a long way to get home at a decent time. With 40 to 45 pilots or more it would allow us to get in 6 flights instead of 4.

Again we are looking for feedback, and just trowing this out for discussion. Please lets us know your thoughts.

I'm from D7, and have family in the area (Rayne). For me it would have more to do with the alignment of the stars, and logistics, than how many days the contest was. Sounds like a good one. If you time it to coincide with the Rice Festival, like this year apparently was, it would make a good excuse for me, even though it puts a squeeze on lodgings.

I visited there in '08 and checked out the field. Met a guy name Jon (Jetpilot? or something like that). Sadly, missed it by a week.

What dates would we be looking at here- Oct 18-20?

Just a question... why is it taking 3 days for 6 rounds... I'm from the AGS originally and we ran contest with over 40 pilots and did 6 rounds in two days. We have line bosses that keep the line moving and then also run 3 flight lines. Not saying this is a bad thing of a 3 day event other than it does increase the travel expense with a extra night of lodging & meals.

If you keep a contest moving should not be a problem.. or the other option is limit the number of pilots to each class like Chip is doing at a contest in 2013.

Just my 2 cents.

why is it taking 3 days for 6 rounds...

Scott,

The main issue is AM sun position. Most runways in eastern D6 are oriented north/south with the pilot facing east. With the sun pretty much dominating the center of the box until 10:45 am, first scored flights do not occur until this time. Starting competition flights with the sun in the box before this time has proven to be unsafe not to mention difficult to judge. It’s typical at the pilot’s meeting a vote is taken about when to start flying. It's usually unanimous to start after the sun reaches a safe height.

Experience has shown on average with 30-35 contestants spread throughout all classes it takes 2-2.5 hours per round. Starting at let’s say 10:30am this implies if flying continuously to complete 4 rounds on day one the last round would conclude between 6:30 and 8:30 without weather delays. Even if 4 rounds are completed it becomes difficult to get in 2 rounds the next day and have a reasonable finish time to accommodate contestants who have an average 3-4 hour drive home, and for some up to 7-8 hours depending on the event location north vs. south Texas for example.

We are fortunate to have a large contingent of Advanced, Masters and FAI competitors which can extend the time it takes to complete rounds. Also factor in the Texas, Louisiana extreme heat and humidity which has an impact on everyone.

In summary eastern D6 events are well run and well attended.

Glen,

Good point about the sun, We have some contest with that same issue, but some of the guys fly with the sun dot to help block it out.

Scott,

Sun Dots are used at events here as well. IMHO they are effective when the sun is located at either end of runway not in the box like it is in Muncie.

The event I ED at my club field in May a Sun Dot is useless before 10:30am when the sun is positioned over the center pole and your first maneuver is a half clover with a 2/4 on the up-line. Try executing that while passing thru a blind spot both up and down lines and a centered roll at altitude. You tend to get "NO" not observed on the score sheets from judges as well.

It's not fair to those who fly early in the flight order vs. late to have to fly with the Sun Dot or raw sun as a handicap. Plus a judge cannot score what they cannot see.

Scott

Our contest is held in late October. the days are getting shorter this time of year. Historically we have gotten in 5 rounds with 45 to 48 contestants. In 2012 we had an excellent contingent of pilots from the D3 district, had 45 entries, and due to personnel reasons 8 pilots that normally attend our event were not able to make it. If they come this year and the D3 group returns we would have 53 pilots. The event is growing and we love having it at this time of year. As Glen also stated we get a high number of masters and FAI contestants which tends to lengthen the time to complete a round. We try to finish up around 2:00 pm on the Sunday as many of the contestants have a 4-6 hour drive, and some even had a 8 to 10 hour drive to get back home.

I threw the question out to see what response we would have, as an option, if we get to the point of having close to 60 or more pilots.

Our event for 2013 is sanctioned for 2 days, Oct 19th and 20th. In addition we already provide an excellent banquet on both the Friday and Saturday nights.
