OK, I know it is 39.25" long...but what is the 'best' gauge of wire to use?

You can use any multistrand and flexible (to avoid breakage under vibration) 24 to 20 gauge wire that is anywhere from 39 to 41 inches long. You could even use 16 or 18 gauge but that would make a pretty unwieldable setup so is not practical.
