Does it work to use a 4 ch. transmitter with a 5 ch. reciever? thanks,

No problem.

As a matter of fact, many manufacturers package 7 or 8 channel receivers with their 4 or 5 channel transmitters. The receiver just ignores the missing inputs. Just don't hook up a servo to the extra channel(s) which don't exist on the transmitter. There's no telling what it will do...

And in case you're wondering, it also works to use a receiver with less channels than the transmitter. The receiver ignores the inputs for those channels it doesn't support.
