Default buying my first rc radio

I will be buying my first rc radio in a week
or so and I am leaning towards the 9cap
futaba or the hitec eclipse seven. I know
most of you will proberly tell me its to
much radio for starters but money is not
so much of an issue and thought I will
grow into it with time as my goal is to
buy a radio that will take me from my lt40 sig trainer or two or three and
into first time ducted fan flying. I do
belong to a club and will have a lot of
help available. Also, can you use a hitec
radio if your trainer is using a futaba
6xa radio to train you from? I am sure I
will wipe out my share of trainers and
low wing planes before even getting
close to flying my first ducted fan jet
but at least I will be fully trained on a
radio that will handle about any thing
that can be programed. What do you
think ? I am also a first time rcuniverse
user. I just registerd today but have
read this forum as much as I can.
Thanks for any info you can
give me and hope you all the best in
the up coming flying season

Default buying my first rc radio

The 9CAP is an awesome radio, and nothing wrong with buying it early in you career, that way you can grow into it, and not have to invest in another one soon. I have been in this hobby for 12 years and the 9CA is by far the best bang for the buck. The 9CAF is the same radio, but comes with FM Rx instead of the PCM, and the Fm Rx works just as fine. The 9CAF radio system comes with the Tx marked 9CAP. Daz...

Default Go For the 9C

Hi Airhawk,
I have only been flying RC planes for about a year and a half and started out with a Futaba Sky Sport 4. About 6 months after I soloed, I bought another plane and basically outgrew the radio. I then bought a used Futaba 6XAS computer radio and that is what I use for a back up radio. Now I fly with a Futaba 8UAFS computer radio (also bought used). To make a long story short, had I intially invested in the more expensive radio, I would have saved myself some time and money. Currently my Sky Sport 4 is the buddy box that I teach my 7 year old son to fly on. I am partial to Futaba so I would go with the 9C. If I had the money and the need for an additional flight pack, I would have bought the 9C instead of the Super 8 but alas, I am a poor college student and my wife would have had me sleeping on the couch for spending $400 on a new radio! Anyways, good luck and happy flying!

Beginner here........... buy the 9C. You'll end up with a computer radio with a lot of channels some day. This will last you for a long while. Love mine!

Although, a radio which would run different freq's (multiplex?) would be cool too! (hey, you mentioned money was not an issue :-) )

Default buying my first rc radio

I would suggest that you buy the most basic cheap Futaba Tx now, and wait until you are ready for a computer Tx before you buy one. There are 3 reasons I say this:

1. Different makes have different styles and features and programming, and it will be a good while yet until you have the experience to understand what matters to you and what you want and need.

2. A friend of mine who flies complex ducted fans wants more channels than his PCM10 has! There are 3 German radios that have 12 channels, ultimately you might find the 9 channels of Futaba a bit restricting especially if you move into jet models which guzzle channels.

3. It will be 2 or 3 years until you are using the computer features other than the basics like model memories and throttle servo travel. By then computer Txs will have moved on again to more powerful, better featured sets at even lower prices and you can get the latest radio once you are ready for it. The 9c will always be a good radio but of course like all things it will become dated. Futaba would like you to think that the 9C is state of the art but there are radios which are 2 generations ahead of the 9C, so you would be buying a radio that is already behind what is available, never mind compared to what will be available in 3 years.

Default What radio should you buy

This, I guess, is one of the R/C questions that receives the greater variety of answers, all right...and in some ways all somewhat wrong. For those who have all the cash, no radio is sophisticated enough for them. For those who can't afford to be in the hobby they try to aperate a 4 channel with a two channel car radio. Honestly, why complicate life for nothing. Modern day R/C requires at least a standard four channel radio. Everyone will agree on this. Most will agree that the beginner does definitely not require those complex 8, 9, 10 channel computer radios. Of course I understand that if you intend to remain in the hobby for decades you will eventually require one or more channels in a not so distant future, say 3 to 5 years. The exception will require one more in less than two years. The precious things that these sophisticated radios do is way beyond your early abilities and you would have to be getting into serious competition to begin to even notice a bit of difference. What if in two years your decide that you don't want this hobby. Your high priced radio will be someone else's free bee. My advice is to get a mid range radio such as the 6xas of and nice 7 channel that has a mini simple computer, if computer you want, one that will enable you to store in memory an few airplanes...and use the extra cash to buy your next plane or your dream flap and retracts dream plane. This mid-range radio will always stay with you anyway to start a season ...or to fdo you thumbs in if you happen to have a mishap that has shaken your nerves. It is always nice to have this reliable back-up to fall back on when needed. Also, if later on your more expensive system fails and you send it in for repairs in the middle of flying season that old reliable in real handy. Lastly it may bail out a member of the family or a good friend. The rextra cash will easily buy a Real Flight G2 R/c simulator that you can enjoy 7 days a week all the time to practice those nightmarrish manoeuvers. Happy flying

Default buying my first rc radio

Hello John,
I do agree that a good simulator should
help a lot in my case. Now when you say
a mid range radio how would you rate a
hitec prism 7x or the new eclipse 7.
They have a super buy on both of these
at tower hobby for april only. The prism
system is $214.99 and the eclipse is
$259.99 plus you get $15.00 of these
prices with the coupon I was emailed
to me from tower. The prism only has
a three model memory so for about less
than $45.00 you can buy the eclipse and
it has I believe a seven model memory.
I have done a lot of reading on both of
these systems. If I was not to go with
the 9c these would be my next choices.
My instructor will be using a futaba 6xas
so can he still run a trainer cord to a
hitec prism or the eclipse if I were to buy one of them .?

Default Buying next R/C radio

Hitec makes a quality product comparable to the more popular brands and in many cases slightly better. The Eclipse is one case. Hitec may not be so widely seem at flying sites not because of quality but due to open marketting and peer influence. There is a great lack of knowledge of the product and they don't produce those highly decorated high class radio gear.
Eclipse is well praised and is Futaba compatible. Prism is the older model and Eclipse the more recent. I almost bought an Eclipse a year or so ago. But I already have 7 Futaba radios...what would I do with an eighth one. I do trucking in used R/C gear. It pays my way through the hobby and gets me what I need ( or want) cheap. Eclipse is a good deal or the Futaba 6xa super. Futaba also has an older model that is still available in some shops here and there. It is the 7 uaf super of the 7uap super. You have enough computer there for the next 4 to 7 years.
Good lick (This is my opinion...and it is just an opinion based on years of experience and lot of listening to others.)
Regards
John

Default buying my first rc radio

hello John,
Thanks for your great info. This the type
of info I have been seeking from rc
flyers with a lot of time in the hobby.
Thanks again.
Do you know if my instructor will be
able to use his futaba 6xas to train me
if I purchase the hitec eclipse? Are they
compatible in this way?
Thank you
air hawk

I'm sure I will be in for a <crash> coarse
very soon, no question about it.

Default buying my first rc radio

My only thing here is that sometimes people get into the hobby and then get out. So if you get the 9C and you decide the hobby is not fo you well........
buy I got into the hobby and my first radio was a 6x because I know I would have more than one plane and I didn't want more than one transmitter. now if you look at it the same way then it's eather a 6x or a 9C and between the two there is no question which to get.
My 6x is on the bench now while I enjoy the 9C

Default What R/C radio first

Hi AirHawk,
Glad to see you are back. I'm pretty sure they are trainer compatible. On your own look for the trainer cable plug-ins. Futaba has Din type 6 pin plugs. Hitec should have the same . However, before you finalize, ask the seller that specific question and ask to be shown just to be sure. Have you found a local club which has an instructor system. Have them identify one and use him as tutor. He will be more accessible and of greater help than anyone else at large. Don't forget to join AMA...or another reputable national association for proper representation, acceptance in most of any club activity and for insurance purposes. Enjoy R/C

Default buying my first rc radio

Thanks for the info John,
I will most likely order from tower hobby
by this Friday so the more info the
better chance of getting a good radio.
I have one more question and it will be
about airtronics radios, especially the
one they call the infinity, I know nothing
about them and can not find any info
on them even at the airtronics web
page. Are they a good radio, medium,
or high end radios,just wondering,
only seen one picture of one that was
a 660 infinity on ebay and it looked
a little different but impressive.
Thanks

Default What R/C radio to buy first

Air Hawk,
Airtronics is also good equipment and they have their gammut too starting with standard to high class radio gear. However, their compatibility is more in line with JR and certainly not with Futaba/Hitec. There is a question of circuitry polarity (negative/positive) here which is different from Futaba and company. I'm a Futaba flyer myself. If I was to start over I would look seriously at JR/Airtronics but would end up staying (probably) with Futaba because of Futaba popularity in my area and reliability over a long period of time. Our 90 member club has about 12% JR the rest Futaba with a couple of exceptions - other brands.

Default buying my first rc radio

Thanks again,
Looks like I'll be leaning towards the
hitec eclipse for a good choice and it has more model memory than the prism but
I may still go hog wild and get that 9c
even if it will be a while before I can
understand all the programing feathers.
It sure will look nice while I walk around the feild with it at the very least. I'm a
retired cnc machinist and have done a
whole lot of computer programing
related to machining steel,brass,etc so
I do have a lot of experience in changing
off sets, and entering data into these
systems so I just got to learn to FLY
first with the basics and than after that
try to apply the extra program feathers
to the way the plane flys . Sounds like
a plan and after piecing back together
a few planes maybe I'll get this done
if I have enough pieces to glue back
together.I will proberly buy two or
three trainers to keep a couple handy.
Iknow no confidence ! air hawk

Default buying my first rc radio

From air hawk,
Guess what I just did? I just got the
winning bid on a futaba 6xas system
and I believe it has a pcm reciever with
it. I got it for $180.00 plus $15.00 for
shipping and handling. I believe it has
about all the main goodies needed and
the seller says its only slightly used and
about six months old. Sure would like
to have some one take a quick look at
it and let me know if I did a good move
or not. EBAY ITEM #1723672666
I sure would appreciate it.
Thanks for all your help

Hopefully you did alright. It doesn't specifically mention a receiver but does mention a receiver battery. Also, it's a generic picture of the transmitter, not a specific picture of the system. The person has good feedback, though not a lot of items bought and sold (better than 0 items).
Good luck with your new radio!

All this talk about using a 9C with a 6XAS for training and nobody mentioned that the trainer cables to go from a 6XAS to a 9C can't be found yet? Geez... awsome, guys.

I just want to say thanks to everyone
for all the great info you have left me on
buying a good radio. I will give this
futaba 6xasp a try and at least I know
it will be compatible with my instructors
radio because he has the same one
except its a little older and not as many
model memory. If its not what I like a
little later I will just Ebay it again and
go for another. Thanks again everyone.
I guess its about time to end this thread but I'm sure I will start another
soon and let you know how many planes
I crash before I get the hang of it.
Talk to you soon

Default 6XAS

Hi Airhawk,

Did the system you bought off ebay come with a receiver? I just checked out the ebay listing and didnt see any mention of what receiver came with it. I have both the 6XAS and an 8UAFS. You will like the 6XAS, it was my first computer radio. I bought both my radios used and w/o servos, RX etc. I already had 3 flight packs so I didnt need the system, plus I saved alot of money that way. Anyways, happy flying!!!
