Okay, the Horizon package came this morning. It consists of a DSM2 DM9 transmitter module and a DSMX 7 channel reciever packaged together.

Using the Spektrum DSM module...as with the 72mhz module the 14 pin connector is removed and the module bay returned to regular five pin setup. Select "PPM9" under the modulation menu because "DSM" will not allow a bind. Then go through a regular bind...outlined in the JR XG11MV owners manual. I see a major problem here. Why doesn't the module modulate in DSM2 instead of PPM or basically the equavilent of 72mhz?

The interface to the DM9 module is PPM. It measures the pulses, converts them to binary, and sends the binary over in the normal DSM2 manner.

It is more like PCM than 72MHz FM was, except that the data is going over in very small, fast packets.

Okay thanks, then is that the same RF protocol that my 12X used before sending it in for the "X" upgrade?

Very good, then I would venture a guess that the DSM selection on the modulation menu is for a possible future DSMX module "if and when" some sort of licensing agreement is reached.

I don't know. You could try asking jramericas.com what it's for.

They probably already had it built in when future plans changed direction. Thanks Andy for the information...very helpful.

The XG11MV manual is somewhat misleading in its instruction about setting up the modulation type. It’s not surprising the Spektrum DM9 module would use the PPM9 setting as it was designed to be used in all module transmitters not those designed just for DSM. JR had their own DSM modules which IIRC had model match and other such capabilities. The DSM setting might have been for their modules.

Those were Spektrum modules for the 12X MV radio. You may be right about that being the purpose. IIRC that was a different format, though. I never got very close to those products.

There were 2.4GHz modules for the 9,10, and 11channel transmitters. While they weren't aimed at the American market, they probably would have fitted into the units sold here. Looking at the JR Japan web site, only the DSMJ modules are available. They discontinued the DSM2 modules.

The DSM modulation setting is for the dedicated JR DSM2 module (and DSMJ module for the Japanese market) that was sold with the original 11X Zero module based Tx. Even though the "standard" 5 pin connector is used you still got all the functionality of a dedicated DSM2 system such as model match, servo sync etc. and also inherently less latency as there was no ppm conversion going on. You also got all 11 channels. I don't believe the 11X-Zero was ever sold in the US, also it unfortunately appears the 11X-Zero DSM2 module has not been made for quite a while. Some shops might still have some stock, however, not in the US as it was never sold there.
