So my wife wants to start flying and I want to use a buddy box. I have a 12X DSMX set up and she'd have either a XG6 or XG8. Do I need to use another DMSS radio or will my 12X work as a slave?

I've used my JR XG11 radio as a slave to a Spektrum DX6i. We also tested it in reverse. It should be fine. Just go thru the set-up and test it before the first flight.
