I would like to get a used DX6i for buddy box and small flyers. How would I know if it supports just dmx or supports dsmx and dsm2.

Unless it's a European radio with current updates, you won't find a Spektrum radio that does not support DSM2. Even the newer radios or older radios that have been updated to DSMX, still support DSM2. As to whether or not it's DSMX, I'd check the menu on the radio, it should say on one of the screens (I forget which one, been a long time since I had a DX6i) if its DSMX.

I wont be able to see the radio, I'm buying used online. So you're telling me "all" DX6i radios are DSM2, correct?

Yes. It will be DSM2 functional unless it is very new and is an EU 2015 unit. This is only possible if it was purchased new very recently.
