You just received an excellent gift. The TX850 is a very good system, a wealth of features and easy to program. IMHO it is the best buy for an 8 channel system that you can get plus the receivers are quite inexpensive yet ultra reliable.

Hey Smoketrail I agree with Charlie, while I do not use this system for my own stuff I do own one of the transmitters so that I can buddy box with some of the folks I mentor with this system.
It has one feature that you are probably not aware of and that is any Tactic tx model will buddy box with any other Tactic tx model without any cord at all. A cordless buddy box system. This is a tremendous asset and one you may want to soon access when you make the transition to fixed wing.

Yes I do of course the question must be asked do you wish to fly glow or electric? Many still do start with glow and I always suggested if you goal is glow/gas then buy all means start with glow/gas. If you want electric Here is just the ticket:

This airplane has been extremely successful at our field and we have even held special events for them. It can be purchased receiver ready for those who already have a system but all version include the auto pilot system which works very well but of course no substitute for a 'mentor'. You can also by a RTF version which uses the lower priced tactic radio and system such as in this link.
Now if you purchase this package you will have your own buddy box since you already have the upscale tactic tx and you will have an extra receiver for next airplane. Oh by the way one is never enough

The transmitter actually stops operating at about 3.5 Volts. We'd not want to operate lower than 4 Volts. However, you need to set the alarm so that it warns you when the battery pack is getting low. For NiCd or NiMH battery packs, you don't want to go below 4.4 Volts, which is considered "dead". Therefore, set the alarm at about 4.6 Volts for those battery packs.
Other packs will need different voltage settings.

charging to... what?

when charging the tactic 850 transmitter battery it shows the cell figure and a number like 5.0 ans it seems partially filled-in.
but when charging for a long time (like overnight) it show something like 5.3 but the cell figure does not look full.
why?
and what is the maximum voltage the pack takes?
thanks

It all depends upon the battery pack used. The TTX850 on my desk has a 4-cell NiCd battery pack, which will read about 5.2-5.3 when fully charged, but drops to around 4.8-4.9 for quite a quile. I'd stop using the transmitter when it gets to about 4.6.
Fully charged, NiCd cells can be as high as 1.5V per cell when "hot" off the charger, but drop quickly.
If you have good cells, then you charge them at about 1/10C for about 12-15 hours. They'll be fully charged, then. Or use a peak charger and repeat the charging to peak 2-3 times to make sure the pack's actually peaked.
If you choose other cells, then charge them according to their maker's suggestions.
