I read somewhere I can plug another 4.8 volt into an emty spot on my reciever for safety 2 packs still only 4.8 volts does it work?

I'm 99% sure it does as the power/ground lines are bus connected on every RX I have seen. What this basically means is that you can plug the battery(s) into any batt or ch slot on the RX and there is no reason why you can't plug in twice. Just be sure both packs are the same voltage. However, the packs do not need to be the same capacity.
The only exception I know of is certain high end RXs may have a DSC or some other type of direct programming connection that cannot be used for power. But even so, you can still use any of the CH or Batt slots on these RX's for power.
FYI, there are battery backers on the market that also allow two batteries to be used on one RX. However, I cannot recommend one because I have never used one.
