Default hi band vs low band

is there any advantage to have a freq in one or the other ranges for flying?

No, get one that no one else in the club is on so you can fly when ever you want.

If it's on one of the 50 channels on the 72Mhz band here in the US, yes, it's fine. Unless you are a member of a club that doesn't allow certain channels due to local interference or whatever.

High band and low band is only an issue with Futaba equipment.
