Default Different # of Rx and Tx channels

If I have a 4 channel receiver, can I still use a 6 channel transmitter?

Default RE: Different # of Rx and Tx channels

Yep. I do it all the time (8 channel TX with 4 and 5 channel RX's). Obviously, the upper channels won't do anything though.

The reverse is also true, you can use an RX with more channels than the TX. Just don't plug anything in to those unused channels.
