Default 2 Receiver Batteries???

Help me out here......I'm new to this stuff......If you want to use 2 batteries on your one receiver, I guess the reason is for backup....any other reason? How is that done? Do you use one battery and switch as usual, and the 2nd with switch plugged into one of the unused servo/channel plugs on the receiver???????//Thanks wc
