I have a Futaba Skysport 4 radio. The top segment of the transmitter antenna came off. Its a solid rod, about 6 inches long with a small hole at the bottom. Any good idea how to fix it again?

You mean replace the whole antenna with new one? Easy. Question was if the existing one can be fixed.

Price a replacement antenna, compare it to the cost of fuel, or some of your other acessories and go buy a new one. Repairs are possible, but not recomended.

Nope, it cannot be effectively repaired without causing yourself agrivation every time you want to extend it. As suggested above replace it they are cheap.

didn't anybody bother to look where ZM is posting from?? there still are places in the world where finding the simplest things can be a major lesson in frustration.

ZM the quickest, most reliable fix would be to insert it about 1 cm into the next segment and solder it in place. BTW i gave up on collapsible antennas years ago. i now use a music wire whip soldered to a threaded adapter made from a brass screw.

Solid antenna's are actually better because you don't have to worry about contact resistance between segments. Lots of people have had problems when they oil up their antenna thinking to let them slide better, only to find out it kills their range checks because the oil is acting as an insulator between the segments.

You are absolutely correct Dave and no I did not catch the location. In this case of course soldering would be the only practical solution of course if you can get the section inserted into the next section. Not very convienent at times but would keep you flying reliably.

Lynx's observation about the oil from you hands is a common problem also even with a healthy antenna. For this reason on my most used Tx's I do periodicaly clean the antenna with a clean rag soaked in some alcohol and this does wonders in keeping the segments sliding easily along with maintaining electrical continuity.

ZAGNUT what is the guage and length of music wire you are using.

i use 2mm wire the same length as the original antenna and add a plastic bead to the tip. this gives the radio the same balance and feel as the telescoping antenna.
