In a clear open area, well over a mile is possible. Performance depends on the equipment used, the installation, and environment.

That depends on how large your plane is. A 5 Meter scale sailplane with 16 foot wing spand might be seen close to a mile out.
I know we get our 3 meter sailplanes pretty far out.
Range is more a function of the receiver. Most, but not all our 72 mhz RC radios are over half a watt and when combined with the right receiver have 1mile+ range ratings.
On the other hand you can have a 3/4 watt radio (max I think in USA) and a GWS pico receiver and a working range of 500 feet max.
