Default HS5645 Digital vs. HS645MG

What advantages is one going to see by using a digital servo such as the HS5645 over a standard HS645MG?

Both are rated at 6.0VDC: 133 oz-in. and both have the same speed only the digital is $54 while the other is $40.

I am looking for servos for my DP Extra 330L and before I spend the money on digitals I want to know just what benifits I am going to get with them over the others with the same torque, speed, etc...

Precision.

Hitec 6xx servos are strong but are *not* known for their centering ability.

'nuff said.

Default ditto

I agree with visioneer.

Additionally, if you own the programmer, or know someone who owns one, the digitals have several paremeters that can be programmed into them.

Thanks... Terry Holland of Golden State RC sent me this link which is a great explanation of digital servos...

Default More Battery Drain?

Is it true that if you use all digitals that you have more juices going to them and you should charge more often and use a bigger maH pack??

Thanks guys, after reading that pdf I ordered:

1 - Hitec Supreme RX w/ Channel 59 crystal
1 - Hitec HS-5945MG Digital Servo 181 oz-in (1-Rudder)
4 - Hitec HS-5645MG Digital Servo 168 oz-in (2-Aileron, 2-Elevator)

Default I'm actually

I'm actually putting the 5945's on elevators and ailerons, and a futaba 9252 on rudder.

Same airplane

6 volt dual battery system with 1700 mah batts all around...Not sure whether I'll use a regulator, but I probably will....

That's a lot of amperage.
Use the regulator 'lest you burn something up.

You should not use a voltage regulator with the Hitec digital servos.

Not necessarily: Check the February issue of Model Aviation, Sailplane column. The Hitec digitals draw less current per oz-in of torque than other comparable digitals AND regular servos that the author tested. That includes the regular Hitec 6xx series of servo, even. The other mfr's digitals do not behave this way.

I'm not talking a little difference either - it's like half the current of other servos. Check for yourself. That means you put in the Hitec digital in place of a std analog servo and get more torque in reserve, and less power used overall. Amazing.

Mike, anything you can add to this?

Default TO MIKE MAYBERRY

Why are you saying not to use a 6v regulator on the battery to Rx line. Why would a servo care if it's source was regulated as long as it was working properly.Could you give us some more info please.

The regulators bottleneck the current available and the servo can be starved for power. Plus the Hitec servos can handle up to 7.2V with no problems. Not that I'm suggesting you use a 6 cell battery!

Is there any downside to using a 6volt battery other than the commonly known problem that 6volt batteries generally do not last as long as 4.8volt batteries between charges?

My configuration:

8-channel supreme
(4) HS-5625s ( (2) airlon (2) elevator )
(1) HS-5645 (rudder)
(1) HS-425 (or HS-422) (throttle)

(2) MPI Switches
(2) 6Volt 1300mah batteries

There are no downsides other than slightly less runtime, but the 20% extra speed and torque you gain are worth it IMHO.

Mike.
