Futaba servos: 3001 vs. 3004
What is the deal here. Both the 3001 & 3004 are BB servos. The 3004 is lighter, cost less, and has more torque than the 3001. Yet the 3001 is called the "precision" servo. I'm led to believe that the 3001 is the better servo, but how can you argue with the 3004 when compared to the 3001. Please help!

Futaba servos: 3001 vs. 3004
Well, they both have 3-pole motors so precision really isn't going to be much different. The 3003 and 3004 use direct drive potentiometers so they don't stand up to vibration as well as servos with belt-driven pots. The 03 and 04 also use a differnent gear set, which I assume is not quite as good as the more expensive servos. Torque specs are somewhat misleading and aren't always a good indicator of servo quality.
I have a bunch of 3004s, some came with my 9C, some I bought subsequently. They are okay for sport use, but I would not buy another one, mostly because of the stulid split grommet. For as much grief as those hedious things have caused me and others, the Futaba engineer who came up with that design to save 10th of a Yen ought to be taken out back and forced to commit hara-kiri.

Dab a teeny bit of thin CA on those stupid split grommit thingies and they all-of-a-sudden get smarter.
Wallace: "Stay, Grommit! Stay!"
Yea, I still hate them. The Hitec 425's are worth the piddling extra dollars over the 3004's.

CA works, of course. Though like you said, there are plenty of superior quality servos for same or even less money. Why should we even bother with CA? BTW, 425BB has dual BBs and you can buy 5 for $59.95 at ServoCity. That's $11.99 each.

Ah, so. THAT'S why Futaba says not to use 3004s in helicopters... always wondered about that.
Volfy, did you lose your dykes? I just bought a 4VF (with 3004s) to use as a buddy box; needed a flight pack too, so what the heck...
Anyway, the wife wandered into the shop while I was installing the servos into the LT-40, and she saw me attacking the brand-new servos with my dykes. She wigged out; "What the HELL are you doing???" Wasted ten minutes 'splaining that one...<G>

No kidding; with a dull butter knife.

RE: Futaba servos: 3001 vs. 3004
Well here it is 5 years later and I just discovered this wonderous Futaba split grommet system. How can anything that bad still be in production ? It tells me all I need to know about Futaba ; or let's just say I am very satisfied with JR. I bought 4 Futaba S3003/4 servos . On the first one I cut the grommets in half but what a pain to get 4 (8) of those assembled inside a fuslage. Also I am not sure the grommets are actually functioning as they should to block vibration from destroying the servo.
[later that same evening...] here is a way to do it: insert the eyelets in 4 rubber "grommet" pieces/ apply CA+ glue to underside of servo holes, glue the pieces to the servo and allow to cure well / next locate two spring clamps such as those black steel 1" paper stack binders / apply CA+ to the top of the servo around the 4 holes, bend the rubber "grommet" pieces up around and clamp in place one end at a time.
but I am not buying any more of these servos.

RE: Futaba servos: 3001 vs. 3004
After installing a high end servo with the nice little slot, the next time I ran into a cheapie split grommet servo it took me all of 2.3 seconds to whip out the dremel and put a nice little slot in the cheapie and use the 'easy' grommet rubbers.
