use a tower or hitec! just make sure you have the unidirectional cord. Also BE SURE TO REMOVE BATTERIES CRYSTAL AND ANTENNA from the buddy box. I blew out two transmitters learning my lesson!

Thanks dntmn. I know that the 9C has two types of training cord, the square-to-round or the square-to-square connector types. Which one are you referring to ?..............

Both Hitec and Tower are round so I would assume the Square to round if Your 9C is square

Most old AMs use a different jack and ARE NOT, repeat NOT, compatible with the futaba FM trainer systems.

The 9C uses the newer, more secure, sleeker, better locking square din. Any other Futaba radio used that's sold in the last 10 years will use the older round plug. So you'll need square to round.

Hi AM, somebody "crashed" into my thread on this topic and I am really glad you replied here. You're just great !!

So, AM, what I'm looking for is a cheap 4-channel radio that I can buddy with my 9C PCM. Is any old Futaba AM radio compatible ? Which model please ? Thanks again..................

rajul

Check out this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1765042328

Its a Hitec Focus 4 FM with Receiver(bonus) and trainer system, This will work great with the square to round cord. Its current price is $26, the final will likely be under $50

Hope this helps

RAJ,

Go to www.brucknerhobbies.com. They have a NEW Futaba 4VF buddy box for $25. You'll need a trainer cord. Square to round which they might have or Tower surely has.

I bought one about two months ago and it works great. Cheapest price I've seen.

All current Futaba radios and buddy boxes work with all current generation futaba radios trainer systems (assuming the radio has trainer port).

EXCEPT the 6X and 7U, all futaba radios use an FM student radio even if the master is transmitting in PCM (the 6X and 7U use an older, less sophisticated system which requires the student to be PCM if hte master is PCM).

the 4VF is a perfect student radio with your 9C. As is a 6VA, 6VH, 8U, 7U, 6X, 9C, 9Z, 5U, etc...

I had the same delema, owning a 9WC and wanted a resonable buddy system,,, you can get futabas on ebay for $35 or you can do what I did, pick up a 9Z off RCU for $100 and have a spare 9channel... money well spent

Another thing, Raj,

When I got my buddy box, it had the crystal in it. I don't think it's supposed to come with a crystal- or antenna and battery- for that matter.

If your's comes with the crystal too, sell it for $10 and your buddy box becomes even a better deal!

Carefull using TX Crystals. I recently went to three hobby shops looking for TX Crystals for a Hitec Laser 4 with no luch. Frustrated I called Hitec and they said that they tune each Transmitter to the crystal it origionally comes with and they do not sell crystals. The bright side is that I Shipped them my Tx and they replaced the crystal tuned the transmitter and shiped it back for $15. There are a lot of strong arguements that Futuba and JR are better than Hitec. My money is where the service is! Hitec

Just FYI -- you will find pages and pages of posts from me explaining that and why it is against FCC regulation for a user to change the transmitter crystal.

We change transmitter bands for $20 flat rate; receivers $20 flat rate, and numerous other services on a flat rate fee so you know exactly what you'll be paying before you ever send the item.

Thanks AM! I was actually thinking RX while I was typing as I know you don't want to change the TX crystal, but my brain didn't make the connection.

I suppose if someone happened to lose or damage their TX crystal, they could replace it with the same freq' with no problems?
